Rep Power: 0 | Re: Lotion sales for employees Cash is the biggest motivator. What is the commission rate offered to the employees currently? At the salon I'm managing, the owners have decided to give 10% commission on all lotion bottles and samples sold... however, if you are working with another employee that amount is equally split between the 2 on the shift. Personally I think this strategy is garbage but the owner thinks it’s great so I can’t do anything about it. Anyway, our problem is that the girls aren't pushing the higher end lotions and so they're not making anything on commission because let's face it, 5% of $25 isn't that much. And the store isn’t making the kind of money it should be on lotion sales. Offering a competitive incentive plan is the key and set goals for the store and individuals. If you hit your target sales then you get a cash bonus. Movie tickets, concert tickets, etc. are nice prizes but there is no substitute for cold hard cash. Also, I’m 25 years old.. movie tickets are not that big of an incentive to me.. and probably not to teenage staffers. If I could implement my own incentive plan (I’ve been on both sides so I know what I would want to be offered) I would offer 10-15% base commission on all lotions and accessories. Then, would run specials where either certain lines or products were worth a higher commission rate for a specific time period. I would also run lotion selling contests between the employees and other salons and give out a nice cash bonus to the top 3 sellers. Education is another factor. If you employees aren’t confident in knowing the product, how can they get a customer to be confident enough to fork over $30+ for an 8oz. bottle of lotion? The employees need to know what the ingredients are in the products and what they do as well as what the benefits are of each different lotion are. A confident sales person can close the deal. Your employees should be able to pick up every bottle of product and have at least one selling point or catch phrase to capture the customer’s attention. I also truly believe that acknowledging your top sales people will motivate others to strive harder to in at the top. If the employees aren’t aware that they aren’t selling as much as they should be then they will never pick up the pace. Once people start getting noticed for selling hard and in turn seeing that extra bonus in their pay check, I’m sure they will start selling too! Create charts and graphs with the sales goals and where everyone stands. Nobody wants to be at the bottom of those where everyone else can see they’re not selling anything. This isn’t rocket science. I think the problem is that management and owners already know this material. This is their lives. Employees that work 15-25 hours a week truly don’t care the same way we do. We cannot forget this at any time and need to give them a reason to care enough to want to sell the product! |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Lotion sales for employees I have tried commission, tiered conmmission, incentives like gift certificates, movie passes etc. None seem to work. Each month you will have one who makes their goal but 1 month out of 6 aren't good. Am I asking for too much? I can't get them to do their chores properly either. I have offered incentives for who ever got the most done throughout the month. Didn't work. They would sign off on them but weren't done or done properly. I posted pieces of paper with dollar amounts on it in places. If they cleaned and found the paper they would get the money. After 3 months it was still never found by an employee. I understand employees will not care or sell like an owner. But I just wish I could find a couple of gems. |

Rep Power: 17 | Re: Lotion sales for employees We have always offered 10% comission on lotion sales. This has not been a very good incentive for employees to get behind a lotion. This year our lotion sales are double over last year because we greatly increased the selection. We now have about 50 different lotions on the shelf priced with a good, better, best type of price levels. We also sell lotions to employees for cost. This let every employee try the different lotions and be able to answer customers questions with first hand knowledge of the results. |

All they had to do was move the vanity and they would of seen it. This means the night person hasn't been vaccuming properly. We sell lotion to employees at 50% and have tons for them to use for FREE. They try hard for a month and then give up?? |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Lotion sales for employees I don't get commission on lotion sales. I try to sell as much lotion as I can because I really do believe that lotion helps your tan. We are a smaller salon and a lot of our customers that come in we talk to and take the time to get to know ... so it's almost like our little personal mission to help them out in anyway we can. Plus we have an awesome boss that we love so it doesn't make it that hard to put in the extra effort.

Rep Power: 24 | Re: Lotion sales for employees I haven't been around in a while, so I am lurking about. I figure I'd give my two cents about what we do in the salon. Our tanning consultants have 2 ways to earn extra cash & free lotions First Way - Commission - If a consultant has an LPPA of $2 or more on a particular day for that shift, they will earn 10% back on any products sold for that day only. Why should they get commission for a day where their LPPA was only $0.50. They barely made me any money! Second Way - "Beat The Boss" - This is an individual competition among the girls. If their LPPA for the month beats "The Boss" (i.e. me & my mother-in-law combined) they will get a free bottle of lotion of their choice. Last month only 1 girl beat us. It's an eye opener to who is doing their job, see what their sales tactics are, etc.

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Lotion sales for employees I love your "beat the boss" idea. Let me start by saying that I absolutely love each and everyone of my 8 employees, they are all fantastic girls. What I don't love so much is that I out sell them everyday on product and tans. Now I work full time at another job and come to the salon after my full time job..and when I walk in the door things start flying off the shelves. It's not that they don't do a good job, but for some reason they are not agressive (in a friendly way) enough to close the deals. Your "beat the boss" idea is a great idea, I think I am going to steal it! |
