Am I the only one???

Does anyone else find that kids are graduating high school and even into college and can't count?

I am not talking about special ed kids, I mean straight A and B students having a high school diploma, having made A's and B's in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, etc. and can't count the money in the drawer at the end of their shift.

I start with $200 change in the drawer each shift. The cashier is responsible for her money during her shift.

Sunday afternoon, I verified the drawer prior to the cashier coming on duty. I know it was right. Last night, her shift report balanced. Went in this morning 30 minutes early and counted. We were $1 short. The girl (20 is still a girl when you get my age) that came in this morning and verified her drawer and came up with $200 even. I made her count it 3 times before she came up with the same thing I did.

Am I the only one that sees a problem here?? Does everyone have this problem or is it just me????

If this was the only time or the only employee it wouldn't be a problem, but they are all the same.

Re: Am I the only one???

It is a growing problem, billable. The kids are doing pretty much all of their math on calculators these days, because math classes are more advanced in high school and college. The problem is, these kids are losing the ability to do simple math tasks because they don't practice it on a regular basis.

Re: Am I the only one???

I have a girl who works for me who is a senior in high school...AN HONOR STUDENT...and she CANNOT balance the drawer. It is wrong every single time she does it, unless I am here to do it with her. I don't understand it.

Re: Am I the only one???

Today's kids have the calculator syndrome. Most rely on the register to tell them what to give back.

My software allows them to put in the $amt. the customer gives them then calculate the change due to the customer. I make them do it the old fashion way. Put the $50 in drawer and count back to themselves what customer gets, then count it back to the customer (backwards)

I have had as many as 3 girls that couldn 't do that... they didn't last long and def. didn't work the front counter.

Re: Am I the only one???

I can't count anymore. With calculators and programs that tell you what change to give, I'm forgetting myself.

Re: Am I the only one???

I do have to agree somewhat with Neon as well though... It's only been 4 years since I've been out of college (for computer science none the less) and I have a hard time sometimes remembering basic multiplication. If you don't use it, you lose it. But these girls are still in school!

ps. I can't remember any of my comp programming either, so maybe I just have a bad memory

Re: Am I the only one???

Yes, but cash is a dead currency. So needed to add and subtract it well is dying with it. In ten years or less cash and then soon after, debit, will be replaced by super techy solutions. This will eliminate giving change, carrying cash, etc.

The kids, my self included wont need it in ten years because doing things the old (and slow) way is just that, old and slow. I mean kids nowadays dont know how to churn butter either, they dont know how to work, fix a carbeurated engine, they dont know how to balance a checkbook, or sew, some dont know how to cook, or even how to mail a bill in. I have only had to mail one check in for one bill in my short 22 year life. And it was 3 months late because I procrastinated it so bad because I NEVER mail stuff. But guess what? I dont need to. I dont have any stamps either.

Change is the source of a lot of problems, it can be stolen, miscounted, it ages, bills get old and ripped, it takes up space in our pockets, it goes through the wash, etc. So yes, todays kids dont know how to work the aging equipment, but its because its aging. Soon you will have a chip implanted in your hand that only works when your heart is beating and if it recieves a constant flow of amino acids containing your dna through its dilithium chrystal main frame (or something like that) and you will wave your hand over a pad and boom. Your tanning membership is recognized, 15 dollars is billed to your acount for your eyewear and trial lotion packet. No change ever exchanges hands, so no herpes or cold and flu is passed, kids wont eat pennies anymore.

All I am saying is it doesnt make them dumb, its just that they are training for a different world, one that doesnt include slow, ineffective things like change.

Adam

Re: Am I the only one???

I agree with a lot of what you're saying Adam. However, I disagree that it's not their fault for not knowing how to do basic math (such as counting change). Money is just the vessel in this discussion. If you can't do basic math, you can't do basic math. It doesn't matter if you're counting dollars or atoms. IMO
