Rep Power: 0 | Hello all! I am an aspiring tanning salon owner and was wondering if anyone could give me some tips and answer a few questions I have!... 1- On average what do you make a year PROFIT? The old owner of the salon I am planning on buying is throwing crazy numbers at me and I'm worried the book she should me might be fake. 2- Would you suggest owning a tanning salon? Do you find it to be worth it? I am a student and so was the previous owner... she couldn't handle it but I think I really have the drive and definatly could. 3- Some Pros and Cons please... |

One salon can profit $25,000 for the year and there could be another salon 2 blocks away with the same equipment & lotions and profit $150,000. It all depends on what equipment you have, the lotions you carry, your price structure for your tanning packages, the way you price your lotions , your overhead, your tanning education, your business education, your staff, etc...the list goes on and on. First thing to do....research. Talk to successful salon owners on here or other info sites. Some owners are A**holes but there are a few out there that will answer your questions after you have done some homework. There is not an easy answer for your questions for there is so many factors. |

Rep Power: 23 | Ohh my head is spinning there is soooo much more you need to know. how many beds? What kind of beds How old are they? Is the salon Computerized? How many active clients in database? How many total clients? How much does she sell a year in lotion? How much does she buy a year in lotion..from what disties? Does she have a lease? Is is up soon? How much is it? Does she have a option to renew? HVAC? How many tons? How much a year does she spend in Advertising? How much does she gross in CC transactions a year? Are any of the units leased? Does she have a outstanding contrasts with anyone-- printers, advertisers, CC companies, and/or local phone book /phone services. That YOU would be expected to honor? How much was her total electric bills last year? Insurance? taxes? Water bill ---does it have a washer and dryer? CAM costs? That is enough for now. Note: I did not ask how much she ggrossed get theose answered and you can tell how much she is actually Netting/grossing per year. |

All the while, save your money. Then, and only then, consider building or buying a tanning salon. (If you get this far, check in with a mental health professional for help.) |

Rep Power: 117 | I just want to say how refreshing it was to read this link and not see a NEWBIE getting slammed with a bunch of negative. Everyone that responded has great advice! But as a fellow (been open since March)newbie, it's tough if you don't have a significant 'other' to help when times are slow. It's great to be your own boss (most the time) but it's a tough business. There's sooo many up's and down's to it....I like the advice above of perhaps working for another salon for a while and get the in's and out's of what you really need to know to run a salon. Stay a student, earn some money and then learn the ropes and you could better decide if it's right for you. GOOD LUCK! |

Rep Power: 23 | Charlie I hate totell you this but in the north...when shorts get stored away so does teh desire to tan. For teh average consumer. Unless of course they have plans, special occasion etc. There is an ever decreasing number of year round tanners. So when you get one take ccare of them so they do not go elsewhere. JMHO..keep yopur chin up season will be here soon. Paint, clean and keep up your marketing...the tanner will come back soon. |
