Rep Power: 0 | Just want to know if anyone has had to let a family member go? And, if so, how did it go? I made the HUGE mistake of hiring my husbands "step cousin" in December. Everyone warned me that this was not a good idea because of the fact of "family" and also because she is a "very controlling person", Never wrong, and very argumentative. I know, I know...I needed people badly and she is older and more experienced than some of my younger girls. Also has a lot of sales experience. Needless to say, ever since day one it has been rough. Always asking me "Why do I do things this way" and "Why did I do that" and arguing with me in front of customers about things. The couple of times that I did set her aside and talk with her, it was immediately..." No I don't or No I didn't...blah blah blah....She is also NOT LIKED by the other employees. Always showing up for work 5 to 10 minutes late...etc...Much more but would then become a book so.... Long story short, I let her go last night. I could not tolerate the behavior anymore. She was NOT going to change. I went in after close and told her that I had decided to let her go. I was very specific but in very few words. I just wanted it to be done. I mentioned all of the above( in a very nice way) and SHE FLIPPED!! Started Bawling, telling me HOW HORRIBLE I AM, She thought I was SUCH A GOOD FRIEND, I don't know her at all...poor poor poor poor me etc.......Anyway, I know I did the right thing. Any similar stories and or advice? Thanks in advance |

Rep Power: 113 | As far as friends/relatives go....I know which ones to hire and which to never consider. I have both my brother and one of my very good friends working here right now, and, just as I predicted, both are two of my best employees. They're both the kind that want to do everything perfect partly because it's their nature (which is why I agreed to hire both of them) and partly because it's my salon and they want to help me do well. I have several family members/friends that I would NEVER consider. I guess it would depend on how well you actually know the person. Like is this person someone you partied with 10 years ago, or someone you've been actual friends with. That's the way I look at it anyway. Besides that, letting someone go is never fun...no matter who it is. Especially if they cause a scene. |

Rep Power: 20 | rule #1 : no relatives, best friends, close personal friends, neighbors, church aquaintences, sports moms, h*rny y*ung m*n, high school dropouts, drunks, (wannabe) actors, (wannabe) actresses, stay-at-home moms whose husbands gross 6 figures, or anyone else i know personally. rule #2 : if you ever stop to seriously think (out loud or to yourself), "should i hire this person?", most likely you shouldn't. rule #3 : from the day before you hire someone, you should give serious thought about how you will fire them. if it comes to it. think about it. who will be affected? _________________ [ This Message was edited by: CentralVA on 2005-05-12 12:53 ] |
