Rep Power: 0 | I apologize for the lenght.. :\ I'm new to the forum, i've been reading you guys for a while now, but finally decided to sign up myself now i need to rant a little, i manage a salon in nyc, although i'm only 19. a friend of mine was the co-owner and when he left, invited me to work here, and i jumped the opportunity. the real owner is also a family friend who knows me since i was 6! out salon is opened 7 days a week, 9-9, and i was told i'd work 4 days a week, mon-thurs 12 hrs a day.. fine, that's not too bad i thought. another employee also a friend of the owners works weekends and fridays, and incase of emergency can always replace me.. so i thought. turned out he works fridays mornings, and every day on top of that, so i ended up working 9-9 mon-thurs, and 9-5 friday.. i am completely myself here, and being new to the industry i was left with a tanning salon all to myself. now the owner is a big business man who owns a bunch of other corporations and doesn't know anything about tanning, all he does is sign checks, he is never here, unless its just to say hey for 10 mins once a month. i had a tough time, we had water pipes break, and beds stop working, and customer concerns i didnt know how to solve. on top of it all this man has made me his personal secretary for another business of his, which all the paper work is here for in the salon. he leaves out of the country on business trips for weeks at a time, and i have full responsibility over everything!! now tell me please, is this a job suitable for an 18 (at the time) year old? my life has fallen apart due to lack of time, i get home at 10pm daily, and obviously have nothing more to do then eat and sleep, and then its the same thing the next day. i can't do this anymore, i am losing eyesight from sitting online all day, and my nervous system is on a meltdown due to annoying cutomers and my owner yelling at me (for his other business, which by the way i know nothing about also!) i've talked to him before asking him to cut my hours, because i start to see my health gradualy going down the drain because of it, and yet he has done nothing about it for the past 3 months he has been promising for me to work 9-5. if i quit he won't have anyone working in the salon plus he needs a bi-lingual person for his other business, i feel bad quiting because he is a family friend for so long, and i also feel bad for purposely doing things wrong in order to get fired because i dont want to let him down. what should i do?! also i am making minimum wage here, and on top of it was robbed by a customer (200$ was stolen out of my purse) a week ago. i can't handle so much anymore, yet i dont want to seem like a cry baby or someone weak, if i complain of feeling sick and stuff. |

Rep Power: 24 | well Ms. Unshine, first I would like to congradulate you on your efforts & hard work, being ssoo young you have taken on alot of responsibilities & seemingly done well...,but YOU come first and if he really cared about you as a young women then he would NOT be putting such a load on you. Just tell him that you have decided to move on & are giving him 2 weeks notice..Good Luck |

Rep Power: 24 | I can see your position, kinda in a tough spot with him being a family friend. If you were not concerned about burning bridges and causing friction you would not be posting this. Being a store owner I know he has to be depending on you a great deal and I am sure he appreciates you but just to busy to stop and express it. You, however are carrying a big responsibility for min. wage. but from what I read it wasn't the pay but the time off you were bothered by. If I were the owner I would think more serioulsy if you told me that your health because of the long hard hours is affected and you are going to have to make some changes. If the note was geared more toward the money, you will have to approach it differently. Have a great resurrection Sunday Tommy |
