Rep Power: 0 | i pay my front desk clerk a dollar above minimum PLUS 10% commission...yes i set the hours to be worked. i try to keep them consistent at 1-8p.m. i have a bed cleaner she is mentally disabled but she cleans beds well. i pay her minimum. problems is she n my fdc dont get along. my fdc is very unhappy becuz sometimes my bedcleaner doesnt do the mirrors & other duties like shes supposed to and then gasp! my fdc has to do them "along with ALL her other duties" which include tours, selling lotions, . my fdc has made it known that she is very unhappy about this fact. i try to give all days off wanted. and never ask anyone to work weekends or clean toilets. is this a common problem? how do i handle this? this is a weekly "issue" which i am getting tired of hearing about i dont care who does it as long as it gets done. what i do care about is someone complaining about "all they have to do" ive been there done that 14hrs a day all by myself. is it wrong of me as an employer to expect my front desk clerk to pick up the slack that my mentally handicapped bed cleaner gives without complaint(i.e. clean mirrors)? i remember when i hired this bed cleaner i was just so grateful to have someone to clean beds for me ! am i being an unreasonable boss or do i have an ungrateful employee? _________________ Life is Beautiful[ This Message was edited by: mollina on 2005-01-03 08:46 ] |

Rep Power: 25 | Well, I just hired my first employee, got her certified and she is in training....I am very hands on still, so at least I know everything will be done at the end of the night, but I know what you mean...I would really try to explain to her, that this girl has a learning disability, and maybe if she made it feel like fun somehow, the girl would do more....I know from experience with working with people with disabilities years ago, that they will go to the end of the earth to please you as long as you treat them with respect and friendliness... Tell your front counter person, to really acknowledge how well the girl cleans the beds, etc and she will find she will do much more just to make the other girl like her and happy |

Rep Power: 0 | I agree...somewhat. I agree about bringing out the strong points to your fdc about the bedcleaner. I also think that if you were to thank your fdc for picking up the slack that it would probably make all the difference in the world. I am not saying you don't thank her, but to me, that's all it sounds like she really wants...praise. Because it is expected of her. She is probably looking at it a little selfishly..."They baby (bed cleaner's name). All she does is clean beds. I do this and this and this and I get nothing." Just tell her how proud of her you are and see if it helps just a little. |

Rep Power: 21 | Why don't you just make sure the bed cleaner knows that it is HER responsibilty to clean mirrors and such...if it's not done it's her fault...shouldn't that solve everything?? Maybe print up a job description?? |

No, But I applaud you for hiring a disabeled person and I don't think it is half a job and I think some allowances need to be made. Disabled people don't want to be given anything and don't expect a free ride. It may take a little more work on your part to make sure that all tasks are completed. I like the checklist idea. IMHO, you FDC needs to have her job requirements re-vamped to include working with the other employess to see that the salon is providing the best face possible. If she/he has a problem with this, replace her. It may just be a matter or placing responsibilty..When my 2nd child was born, my oldest was very jealous until I told her it was her baby too. She then became very protective. Get FDC to take some pride in YOUR salon, after all, she works there too! |

Rep Power: 0 | mollina, i have to say i used to manage a tanning salon and video store at the same time. it is not easy to run things at the front desk and take on other employees responsibilities as well. i think that your fdc girl is trying to do what she thinks is right but she is probably frustrated at you because you are not making the other girl do her job. disabled people want us to treat them the same as every one else but since your not making her do her job is that fair to her? i think that you should have a mandatory meeting and make sure everyone knows there own responsibilities and if they don't do them then they need to be fired. as for your fdc i think if i was her i wouldn't be happy either b/c i don't think its fair to ask her to do both jobs. if i were getting paid a dollar about min. and having to do two jobs i would quit. you should apprciate that your fdc just gets unhappy and doesn't quit on you most people wouldn't put up with that. i wouldn't thats for sure!!!! maybe you should tell your fdc how much you apprieciate her work before she does quit. she must really love her job to do both of them. i wish you the best of luck with this. i know how hard it is to deal with employees who don't do there job... but then again i didn't put up with it... i warned them and then fired them... as a business owner it is our job to be firm and get things taken care of.. if your disables girl still doesn't do her job then i think you should find someone who will. hope everything works out and i look forward to seeing how things work out for you. thanks for sharing. |

Rep Power: 0 | my fdc is very unhappy becuz sometimes my bedcleaner doesnt do the mirrors & other duties like shes supposed to and then gasp! my fdc has to do them You admitted it yourself...your bed cleaner doesn't do her job the way you specified. I agree with everyone. You need to specify again. It isn't right to allow one person to do someone else's job. Also, you praised your disabled girl for cleaning beds well and that you were just so thrilled that you found someone. What about your FDC?? She is taking the bulk off of you, and the BC....you listed nothing about how well of a job she is doing... True, everyone needs a job. But when you are in a position where these people are working in a manner as to do two people's job, it is your responsibility to make them feel worth something in your salon. Do you thank FDC like you do BC, or are you just praising BC infront of FDC without saying a word to FDC???? |
