Rep Power: 20 | I've been working with people all my life. I've been working with numbers almost as long as I've been working with people. I used to talk all the time, and hardly ever listened. Now I remain quiet most of the time, and do a heck of a lot of listening. In order to be as profitable as you can be, you have to control costs. One of the major costs of any business is labor. How do you guys cover your shifts? Peak season, slow season? Double up during peak, and one during off? I'm trying to justify having two people all day long from open 'til close. Smile - the holiday madness is almost over. _________________ [ This Message was edited by: CentralVA on 2004-12-19 13:52 ] |

Rep Power: 0 | I couldn't...justify having two people open to close, that is... I work about 1/3 of the hours and split the rest between four employees...right now, no one overlaps, and I doubt they will during season. If I do have two on duty, it will be me and someone else not two paid employees... Of course, we only have 5 beds, so it's not a huge amount to cover anyway... |

Rep Power: 22 | I cant imagine you need 2 during the day - off season. We have 30 units and I get by alone just fine. I do have two at nite. I need to keep a core group for when busy season starts. I try to do what I can to keep 4 or 5 people to go into busy season with. It is a pain just to train bed cleaners. I dont want to train sales people at that time of the year. Two at nite is a safty issue also. If I had more guys it wouldnt be a big deal. I am just against leaving 1 female at nite by herself. |

Rep Power: 21 | Its not a matter of how hard you are willing to work, it depends on the size of your salon (# of beds), how many customers you have coming thru the door, & the kind of service you want to provide them with. I find, even in the off season, it is worth me having a bed cleaner in the evening. To be paying someone $8 an hour, allows me to spend extra time with each customer coming in, which is a potential sale (even if its only selling a pakcet of lotion, a bigger package, or a bottle of lotion). Just increasing one sale an hour can more than pay for that bed cleaner. Plus, the more you can interact with your customers, the more they want to come back in, becozthey enjoy coming there ( not just for the tan) |

Rep Power: 21 | I work all shifts by myself in the off season which is normally August thru December. I work M-F 9a-8pm, Sat 9-6p, Sunday closed. During busy season, I work M-Sat 9a-9p, Sunday 10-4p. The only time I'll have one bed cleaner would be between 4p-9p on M-Fri, Sat I'll have one between 10a-7p. I work Sundays myself. It allows me in the busy season to spend time explaining to customers about lotion, tanning, etc... I only have 6 beds. |

Rep Power: 21 | I do much the same. I have 4 beds and 1 booth. My hours are Monday – Thursday 9a-8p, Friday 9a – 7p and Saturday 9a-2p in the off season. I have one part-time girl that works some Saturdays just so I can spend a little time with my son. During the busy season (Feb – July) I am open 7 days. Monday – Thursday 9a – 8p, Friday 9a – 7p, Saturday 9a – 5p and Sunday 1p – 5p. I have help M-F 4p – 8p and every other Saturday and Sunday. Labor can kill the business for sure. Keep it as low as you can even when you’re making a profit. You will fare much better working hard long hours most of the time. You can’t ever replace yourself. No one can do what you do as well as you do it. The few employees I have are very good for the salon but I can always see a difference when I’m not there. I knew going into this business the hours would be long. That’s okay with me because I love what I do. If you’re one of the lucky ones to have a salon rolling in dough then by all means hire some help so that you can get away from time to time. But it’s your business and just like a child, you need to be there as much as you can to take care of it. If I ever get to the point where I don’t want to be there I will sell it and find something else to do. But for now I’m willing to do what ever it takes to keep the place running and in the black! |
