I know there are worse problems then this, but I can't afford to keep paying someone an extra 3-5 hours a week right now because they are trying to finish closing up! I love both of my girls, they are both great at sales, great at keeping busy when they are here with no customers, and customers love them. What more could I ask for?

Well, for some reason, (and maybe I'm anal, ok, I know I am) my newer employee just cannot seem to leave per her scheduled time, even on slow days. I figured at first it would take her some time getting used to the closing procedure etc., but now its been 2 months, and she still is leaving over an hour after closing time! If she tans, than its over 1.5 hours!

I've talked to her and she says shes trying to pull her weight and keep things clean (hard to argue with) but, I've stressed that there is no problem with cleaning things while customers are tanning as long as there isn't a lot of noise, and there is plenty of time to vaccuum at night and on the weekends right now before closing because there is definitely gaps of time with no tanners. I've even told them to start closing the cash register 10 minutes before closing, and if someone comes in afterwards, to put it on the next days sales. No big deal to me, I just would like them to try to get out on time!

I KNOW she isn't doing anything bad at all, I FULLY trust her, but if she isn't leaving on time now, what time will she leave during busy season?

I just don't know what to do, I've already talked to her, and it was better for a week and thats it. I don't want to upset her, because whats keeping her here later is cleaning and tidying up...which is great stuff! BUT, I can only afford what they are scheduled...maybe a little more, but not this much more! My other girl has no problem leaving on time, she has been with me longer though. What a problem huh? lol.

O.K. First of all do not pay her for the time that she is tanning. If my girls tan during their shift it is taken off their hours. Tell her that she Must be done with closing 15 min after your shop is scheduled to lock up. Sound to me like she is just trying to make a little extra money. Which I can understand, but yet it is not fair to you. Explain to her again how much you appreciate her doing such a good job, but tell her to pick up the pace and tell her what time she is wxpected to be out the door and gone. During season a slow worker is not going to help you much. Just get you behind. Just my opinion.

They should start clean up earlier, mine get 15 minutes after official closing, and it better have been busy up until then......

I don't pay her for when she is tanning, and I've checked that against the system, so I know she doesn't even put it down on her timesheet which is a good thing. I'm really not sure if she is trying to earn extra money..that was my original thought, but this girl has a full time job earning $50k a year..she doesn't need the money really (its just extra spending $$). I just really think she has a hard time getting everything done. I guess I will have to be more strict about a time she HAS to be out of here. I agree, 15 minutes is the limit.

Spend a shift with her. Give her examples of when you would start doing things DURING the shift rather than after. Then close with her, and show her what to do and how to do it - and see how long it takes. Explain to everyone that you are paying them "X" - their shift plus however long extra you decide to give them to clean.

Do you really care how long she is there in the salon, or just that you are currently paying her until she leaves? If they stay after to accomodate a customer that comes in late, I pay (can check this). Otherwise it is until closing time.

My problem is the opposite - GETTING a few of them to clean!! 1/2 are better than me, 1/2 are slobs. The good half are currently scheduled in the a.m., which is the major cleaning time (salon is slow). But as we hit season, that changes, and some will have to pick up the pace! Time for a "team meeting"!!

These type of thing should be in your manual..and discussed at hiring and during training.

These people are call hour eaters. there are many out there the milk closing and opening for all it is worth. Cut them off at the pass.

If it is in their manual and you notice They came in at 7:50 AM but you don't open until 9 AM tuff tittie...they get paid for 15 minutes before a shift. Same goes for milking closing.

Print their hours 'as is. Change them to the corrrect "payable" hours and print it again. Keep it on file if they ask for the rest of their pay. Show them if they ask. They stop doing it.... or quit and find a job where they can pad their pay.

During slow unless there is a clients in your beds they get paid for 10-15 minutes after closing. And not they cannot tan on the clock. EVER!

During busy...I give a little longer. But within reason. Use your best judgment.

You could easily correct the matter. Start the new year off right in their holiday bonus....... when passing them out make them sign for it. Vebally explain the new salon policies are in there too.... They will not be able to say they didn't know. The ones that get offended obivously do this... most will think nothing of it. It is your salon you cannot be their friend and theor boss.
JMHO

Good luck.

I pay my employees until closing time and that is it! Especially during this time of year, I tell them they can start closing up before closing time (take the trash out, tidy up, and even the register) If they are there after closing time it is all on them. Now the busy season is a different story, if they are there late, I know they are working.

good point MJ, its not in my manual. I'll have to change that. I just reviewed her timesheet again for last week, and its really bad. at least an hour every night almost. I think I'm going to have to spend a closing night with her I think like sunsally said. She goes on vacation for 3 weeks this weekend..so it may have to wait until she gets back. But tonight, i'm going to give her a schedule of how and when things should get done, and how much time she should spend on it..we'll see if that helps.

Just my two cents worth but I would try to resolve it before she leaves for vacation while it is still fresh in your mind. That gives her time to process it while she is gone. I do the same as others have stated....clock out no more than 15 minutes after last tanner and they are never paid for personal tan time.

Jolee, I had the same problem, only my employee was here for at least 1 1/2 hours after closing. When I took over she would be here until midnight or later,(we close at 7:30)she was great at cleaning and organizing, but I just couldn't afford her! I would tell her to go home and she wouldn't, I would come by the shop late at night and she was still here... Finally I told her that I was not paying her for beyond 1/2 hour after closing, if she couldn't get it done, she was on her own. I also told her that my insurance wouldn't cover her being here past business hours (which is the truth). I threatened to cut her hours, anyways after all of that I did an audit of the master edit journal on Helios and I discovered that she was giving away tans (about$1000 so far) to her friends in exchange for them cleaning her house, concrete being poured, etc. No wonder that she was here so long at night! And I trusted her completely....(Sorry, just had to vent) Anyways if I had to do it over, I would just tell her up front, it would be alot cheaper in the long run...good luck
Chris
