I have lists for every every shift on every day (vacuum, reports to run, etc.) and a list for each day for the "once a week" stuff (polish the chrome, high dusting, etc...) It's a checklist, they have to turn it in so I see that everything is getting done...

what I have noticed is that you still have to keep checking on employees. I just implemented a new to-do list for daily tasks that they have to check off as they complete... but do they realize that they REALLY HAVE TO BE DOING THE TASKS, not just checking them off? Maybe they think I'm an idiot. I came in today and some of the things on the list were not done although they have been checked off. I was peeed!

This is one of those situations where you can't be "nice guy" with the employees. A clean salon is a MUST. Be very strict on this! Customers won't return to a dirty salon, they won't complain to let you know why - they just won't come back (but they'll tell all their friends the place was nasty).

That's my little rant. And on the subject, oh yeah, the subject! My advice is to be very specific - dust desk, under keyboard etc, windex windows/mirrors, dust shelf etc... that way you know exactly what you want will be cleaned... but don't forget to test your employees - put a blob of lotion in an obvious spot and see if they'll catch it and clean it. Hide a pair of goggles beside a tanning bed and see how long they'll stay there...

we break down our beds to clean under the acrylics on rotation at each store weekly, that allows it to be done every 5 weeks [not enough actually].
Guess who gets to do it? The employees that filled out their check off sheet, but did not do a good enough job, some of them will never learn, that is the first thing the managers look at when they walk in the door.
