Rep Power: 107 | That's what I thought too! Unfortunately I was be bit outspoken (can you believe it?) with them and I figured I'd be the first one they'd come and visit. It is a Federal Law believe it or not, and if they wanted too they could actually investigate your business including auditing, in order to determine a rev. amount that they deem attributable to background music. |

Rep Power: 107 | I agree with you, but it's the idea that really bugs me. Did you receive a letter from them a few months ago like I did? It bugs me that half the businesses in this town won't be paying it........... |

Rep Power: 24 | That is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard. And, I was thinking about relocating to Canada to work with Neon - DRATS! Soon I will have to pay a license for the street performer outside of my salon for providing me with background music. It's a new tax imposed to help the welfare people that live next door to me afford that shiny new SUV. Soon the electric company will charge a salon license fee for air conditioning because it helps people not die of heatstroke in your salon. Or, a license to the city for a permit to allow your customers to park in your own parking lot, because it helps you make revenue to let the people park. And, the bakery next door will charge a smell license tax for the wafting scent of cake that indeed brings more people by to tan and eat cake after that. I can't believe with all the free trading of MP3 and music on the internet that they would even spend their time trying to collect a fee on this bull*hit. Go underground, bring and play a ghetto blaster in your salon, and hide it in the trash can if any inspectors come in. Pretend you are in the mafia / a so cal gangsta while you hide it, makes things more fun ya know. |

So, can we claim a rebate from them, since maybe it was the background music that drove the customers away? |

Rep Power: 0 | Re: Canadian Salons and SOCAN I wonder if McDonald's, The Bay, Sears or any other business that plays music on the premises is being charged? I know my daughter works at McDonalds and they have a rockin' good time on nightshift - it is what keeps them awake. |

Re: Canadian Salons and SOCAN Across here we also have that law, and until recently they never bother with it, but around 6 months ago they started going around shops and businesses in a town called Newry, louds of places were 'caught'. We play cd's in our salons and haven't had the pleasure of these people yet! I know at present here they have stopped, cos their waiting for the outcome of 2 trials against, wait for it, 2 police stations, who in the public entrance were playing cd's, the police claim that, they have purchased the cd's therefore it is up to them where and who listens to them lol. They also stated that there is no EULA on the back of the cd case's and that they can't be held liable for something which they never agreed nor signed | |
