We have a new health department inspector who insisted on running all our equipment for 10 minutes at the same time, inspected 30 tanners' cards, then sat at the counter for an hour. When I asked why she needed to run ALL the beds at once for 10 min she said because if the timers are off by 10% she can close us down. I think she needs a tan on that white/blue skin, to perk up her attitude. Is this a common experience lately?

We are not regulated. I do know sometimes that people in government can get a big head. I would find out who her supervisor was and call them. All your beds for 10min that cost money. I would inquire if this is realyy what needed to be done. I would not use your salon name though. You never who is buddy buddy.

Seems a bit excessive (no regs. here yet), but if she is within her rights, what can ya do. She may be on a power trip too! That wouldn't be uncommon for Gov. workers who really have no authority, but want to act like they do. I would, if in your shoes, find out what is really needed for inspections and the approved procedures and then wait for the next inspection.

WOW! Having all your beds down for 10 minutes in the busy season, and sitting down behind the desk that's BS.

Even power tripping inspectors are not allowed to come in and cause a financial or perception burden at your salon unless you have been warned before about serious deficiencies.

I think that comments like I can shut you down are not appropriate, call her boss tell them you feel threaten by their inspector comments Your a professional business owner and should be treated like one.

I wouldn't make too many waves until you know for sure what they have the right to do. Research it and find out.

Titan - What state sre you in? I am in Louisiana, we are very regulated. When the inspector comes in you have to show him/her whatever they want, answer whatever questions they have. My inspecter has always been very quick and to the point, but very precise in her inspection. She checks my timer on just a couple of my beds and only for a few minutes (maybe 5). usually here and gone within 30 minutes. I hope I don't get the inspector from **** like you did!!! lol

SunKissed I am in LA also, we have not had much of an issue with the inspectors so far. Generally in and out 30-45mins a few questions asked and on his way. I have heard a few bad stories with inspectors in the Lafayette area. But I feel as long as you keep your salon up to par their is no reason for them to cause and issues.
However, I feel like I am being audited by the IRS when their inspecting... sweating, biting my nails I go have a good Margarita once their gone.

Our inspectors time each and every piece of equipment. Not all at the same time though. They go through alot of client account, ask questions, etc. I think they are pretty thourough but she tans with us and knows we are on the up and up....so we have fun while doing it.

u have it soo easy
my inspector times the bed for the entire length of the bed
also she came for a "visit" once and told me that i had an "official complaint" "probably from the competition"
because i had call my packages "monthly unlimited" on my flyer and that lead the customer to assume that they "could tan anytime they walked in the door" only everyday beds could use the term "unlimited" so she made me throw away all my fliers and print new ones, also the wording for my top package instead of "free access to all beds" had to include the words "per cfr standards" didn't sign anything, didn't see any paperwork re: this official complaint, statutes etc to show how she can control my advertising but complied because as she put it i could be shut down in a heartbeat
