I'm a beginner in the tanning business. I'm taking over an excising salon July 1st. They are leaving me with very few lotions. They were not a big pusher on them so really didn't get any advise. My questions is being that I'm going into the slower season should I buy bottles or packettes? How much should I invest $ wise? And about how many lines to carry is enough?

Everyone will have a different opinion here but I prefer to limit my lotion lines to 3 or 4. My feeling is that when you get gobs of lotion it is hard to tell someone why you feel 'this' one is best for them. With fewer lotions you can develop greater product knowledge and truly 'perscribe' a lotion for a client based on their preferences and pocketbook. Carry a high, mid and lower cost line to cover all your bases. You might also consider some private label to give them something they can't get anywhere else. I would not invest a ton of mney in ltions this time of year but I would have enough that it looks like you in the lotion business. Bare shelves scare people off too. This time of year most of my lotions are out front. I don't keep much excess inventory--might as well let the distributor hang on to it until I need it. Most companies ship quickly and I can have a new order in a couple of days.

Good Luck making this salon your own. Be willing to do things differently and to bend over backwards to make customers happy, especially if the old salon has a bad rep.
Keep posting and let us know how it goes!
