I think we have discussed this before but thought I would toss it out again since we have new people. What is the average age of your employees? I used to hire a lot of 18-21 year olds. They were always bickering WITH each other, ABOUT each other and WITH & ABOUT kids they knew from school. Now I have mostly 25-40 year olds and it is a much friendlier place. I love the mix of my staff right now. My mom is sick and they are more than willing to step in and help if something unexpected comes up. I will always try to hire 'grown-ups' instead of kids (Maybe it is MY age showing )

I agree Pam. Right now we have one 23, 31, 46, and 51 year old. The 23 yr old was hired when she was 17 and I had to fire her. She then came back in 6 months with a def. improvement of maturity. She still complains about other staff sometimes, but she is a good employee. I think she feels like she has been with us so long that she is a fixture... Oh well, I just let it roll on out, cause she does know what she is doing and never calls in sick...

I have 2 employees that are 19 and have not had any problems with them....I think that because I am younger that I enjoy working with the younger corwd...they respect me and my business and it is kind of like I am a role model to them...

Do you mind if I ask what your average pay is? Do you give your employees commissions etc??I don't know if it is just the area I live in, but people that apply for jobs at our Salon are always in the teenager to mid twenties area. I would love to have workers in the 30's and 40's but what do you have to pay them to attract them??

I too would love to hire more "mature" employees but, unfortunately, the pay scale isn't enough of a "draw". 47 employees, the oldest being 23. Can we say....glorified babysitter????? On the other hand, I have hired a few more mature people in the past.....40 or older......and they haven't been able to take the heat. In season, the bed cleaning can be back-breaking....gruelling.....unending...... as we all know. For the most part, the younger generation is great for the job. If I could just get them all to "play nice in the sandbox".......

Maybe because I have already raised my kids, I don't want to do it, anymore. Generally we don't take jobs apps from anyone except tanning customers or their referrals. If they call on the phone--forget it. I don't pay alot hourly but do pay commission. Most of my employees are spouses or kids of GM or Chrysler workers and don't need insurance. Right now we have a good balance. As for older people cleaning beds, my mom (72) worked right beside us all season as bed cleaner and towel person. She isn't real quick but she is thorough and has less back problems than I do. I guess it just all depends on the person. The secret is--How do you find the right person? It is tough to get the right ones that will be good workers and mesh together to become a team. Right now, in our salon, no one is throwing sand!!
Pam

I have 3 employees. Two of them are 21 and the other one is 22. They are great (most of the time). Two of the three employees that I do have are a married couple and they both have full time jobs during the day and work here at night. (I run the salon during the day.) I was afraid there would be problems but it actually works out great. They cover for each other if needed and I have not had any problems at all. And believe it or not I think the husband does a better job than the wife.

My partner and I are only 25. We were 24 when we opened our own studio. We have one employee who is 28 and one who is 26. I doubt I'd hire under 19 and I doubt I'd hir over 40 because that would be too wierd to have someone twice my age work for me.

I'd like to add...age is really much less important than intelligence, interest in the industry, peole skills, grooming, and ATTITUDE!!! I started working when I was 15 and I was never late and never sick and always a hard worker. It was frustrating to be discriminated against by people who were older without the right work ethic or attitude. Sometimes when people get older they learn and mature. Others lose their optimism and drive, or become self-righteous.
