Rep Power: 27 | All smart tan members this month would have received the advertising that the Canadian Cancer Society has started to distribute. It shows a female with goggles on standing in a stand up unit. It states " become a cancer volunteer, unless of course you already are one." Smart tans response was "poster upset Canadian Salons" - it should upset everyone in the tanning industry, Canadians, Americans, distributors, manufacturers, suppliers, please contact the I.T.S. and have them do something about this. "The tanning industry is doing more to prevent sunburn by teaching Smart Tanning than the antitanning lobby is when it overstates the risks" Quote Smart Tan. Our money goes to Smart Tan, and part of that goes to the ITA. Aren't they there to defend us. We smart tan, but we need a large organization such as the ITA to defend, where are they? I have contacted the President of the Canadian Cancer society, and am awaiting a reply, also going to see my lawyer regarding this article, slander? who knows, time to do something that no one will do for me....definatly!!! |

Rep Power: 0 | Shan...is Canada regulated by the FDA? I'm surprised this couldn't be considered implying something to the public. In the US all pharma ads must be sent through the FDA for review. If not in compliance, then the ad is revised. To me this is implying that the minute you step in a tanning both you'll get cancer, which I couldn't see the FDA reviewing and completly agreeing with. Good luck with your efforts! |

Rep Power: 25 | Unfortunately moto the FDA does not regulate in Canada. And as far as ad campaign's needing approval the Canadian Cancer Society is a Government organization, they are above and beyond, yet when we ran radio adverts we couldn't even use the word "smart" because another government organization deemed it as unappropiate. Go figure? |

Rep Power: 22 | Below is an email that I just sent to the Canadian Cancer Society. I suggest that everyone try and send something to them about the misinformation that they are propogating. Their email address is ccs@cancer.ca. Dawn Subject: http://www.cancer.ca/ccs/internet/standard/0,3182,3172_273107_374382_langId-en,00.html I have read the article located at the URL in the subject line of this email. I take great offense to it. I am also offended that a government-sponsored agency would have no qualms in propagating misinformation. While it is true that overexposure to UV rays can cause cancer, a tan does not. A person's skin turning a tan color is a natural reaction to UV rays. The skin and cells are designed that way. Below is an excerpt from www.tanningtruth.com: Calling a tan damage to your skin is like calling exercise damage to your muscles. Consider, when one exercises you are actually tearing tiny muscle fibers in your body. On the surface, examined at the micro-level, that could be called "damage." But that damage on the micro-level is your body's natural way on the macro-level of building stronger muscle tissue. So to call exercise "damaging" to muscles would be terribly deceiving. The same can be said of sun exposure: Your body is designed to repair any damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light exposure. Developing a tan is its natural way to protect against the dangers of sunburn and further exposure. I sincerely hope that you will do more work in researching your various campaigns prior to launching them. Providing this type of propaganda hurts you and the people you are trying to help. |

Rep Power: 22 | Believe it or not but I got a response about this! Typos and grammar errors were left as they were written by the good doctor. Here it is: Tanning through exposure both to the sun and to artificial tanning devices has been clearly shown by resaerch studies to be a risk factor for skin cancer. both melanoma and non-melanoma. Please see the attached web-site of the US Department of Health National Toxicology Program http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/roc/tenth/profiles/s183uvrr.pdf and the web-site of the International Agency for Research on Cancer http://www-cie.iarc.fr/htdocs/monographs/vol55/solar-and-uv-radiation.htm Dr Barbara Whylie Director, Cancer Control Policy, Canadian Cancer Society |
