Rep Power: 0 | A client of mine asked me about some tiny (about the size of the head of a pin) that she sees on her legs when she gets really tan. Could these spots be hair follicles? I promised her I'd ask and try to find an answer for her. |

Rep Power: 24 | In regards to your question regarding the “spots”.. Unless we see them we are just guessing at what it could be. They could be freckles, or they might be a superficial fungus infection. If you want, try applying clotrimazole cream 1% (over-the-counter.) If that doesn't clear it up in 2 weeks, show a doc next time you see one. Remember there are such things as white freckles……. Or,It sounds like they have tinea versicolor, a noncontagious fungus which affects people on the neck and chest and back and legs. It leaves marks which are either lighter or darker than the surrounding skin. Sun doesn't cause the condition, but highlights it, because the spots don't tan like the rest of the skin. See a doctor who can treat it. It's easy, and the spots go away, though they take a while for the color to even out, on the average of a month or two. Then treat any recurrence right away, so it won't become widespread and unsightly. I can't answer you with certainty, they may have vitiligo, which is complete loss of color, but then again you may just have a minor form of hyperpigmenation (partial and reversible loss of pigment) brought on by minor inflammation. For more certain diagnosis, you should consult a dermatologist for evaluation and examination with a Woods light, an ultraviolet light which can readily distinguish between these two possibilities. Also this person may have had chicken pox in this area and these are scares left from that…….. With-out seeing it and using a woods lamp to determine what we are dealing with we could guess all day long… Best to see a doctor if this is bothering to them.. C |
