We are new to tanning and have gotten these racing stripes down our back. We are stuck with the salon that we use due to personal reasons (very dear family friends). Is it the bed we are using and if so are there any tricks we can use to help eliminate these stripes? Thanks, Panicked!!!

Sometimes this is caused by your skin not being ready for the exposure time. How long was your session?
There can be other factors that can cause this as well.

Twenty minutes the first time I got the stripe. The second time, I went for the same amount of time, but I shifted my body over to each side every few minutes and the stripe did not appear. Do I just need to shift every time or what is the trick?

Wow! I would never let anyone start out 20 mins. You need to go slower to build your tan.

The bed says to start out at four minutes at a time at first and that just doesn't seem worth the drive to the salon. What do you suggest. I tan easy and well.

without skin typing you i can't say for sure. but we never let anyone start over 10 mins, (depending on skin type) some start at 4,5 6 mins. but never over ten.
and then we only increase the time by 2-3 mins. until they get to the full 20 session.

I've heard that those stripes occur when the bulbs need changed, but I'm not positive on that, just what I heard

Stripes can also happen when the WRONG BULBS are placed too far away, in the Wrong Bed....
Like, Reflector bulbs in a tanning bed that was not made for reflector bulbs.....

There may also be a slight difference as to how your back meets with the bed. Somtimes your shoulder blades and bottom push you back up forward and you can get some lighter shades. Once a week we use a stand-up tanner just to fill in any tanlines.

Believe it or not, we just rotated to the left for awhile and then to the right for the next few times that we went and now we have gotten it all to even out. Our problem was that we must have been trying to rush it all to fast. Thanks for all the input.
