Rep Power: 26 | FYI To Ask Don's Army: Nashville Comment #1: First of all, I want to thank all of those who honored me by attending my talk in Nashville! I needed a little more time to better explain some of the terminology we use (there was a list of definitions in the "hand out" package) and we needed another hour for a discussion period. Next year in Nashville and next summer in Las Vegas will be better because we will learn from our experience. For instance, at the next "Ask Don Wants YOU To Get Involved!" seminar, I plan to have some other folks presenting "real life" data to substantiate the technical information I will provide. 2. Nashville Comment #2: I can't remember who came up with the slogan "Ask Don Wants YOU To Get Involved!" but I love it. I am going to "pose" for a picture and create a poster (like the Uncle Sam picture in WW II) that we can use. 3. Nashville Comment #3: I was "breathing hard" on the way home thinking about how wonderful it will be if those who "committed" to attending the FDA/Indoor Tanning Industry meeting next February/March show up as promised. My "dream" is that tanning salon owners will outnumber regulators and vendors at this meeting! My "dream" is that the regulators (and vendors) will learn "first hand" that tanning salon owners are the ones who (1) best understand the intracies of the indoor tanning business, and, (2) are committed to making sure that the public can tan without sunburning. My "dream" is that regulators and vendors will know what I know; i.e., that there are some wonderful, talented people who are proud to call themselves tanning salon owners! 4. Nashville Comment #4: I also got "hot and bothered" thinking about the fact that it may be possible to get +100 people participating in future "E-Campaigns" to protest anti-tanning activies by (1) the media, (2) the sunscreen/cosmetic industry, and, (3) the medical (especially the derm's) community. We'll soon see because I'll be posting my "Shape Magazine E-Campaign" later today! 5. Nashville Comment #5. There seemed to be widespread agreement that the ITA/Smart Tan Seminars were targeted to the "newbies" and the resultant "dumbing down" process cause them to be a waste of time for experienced salon owners. Well folks, it is time for us to make our views known to ITA/Smart Tan for next year! It is time for us to tell ITA/Smart Tan to have a "dual track" (like we had in Chicago) that will have sessions for both new and experienced people. It is time for us to tell ITA/Smart Tan that we want to hear more sessions put on by our experienced peers and have less sessions put on by "hired guns" who could just as easily be talking to a "widget" trade show. 6. Nashville Comment #6: It was also VERY clear that tanning salon owners DEMAND that ITA/Smart Tan provide speakers that THEY want to hear! No more "you know who's" that cost an arm and a leg. 7. Nashville Comment #7: It was also perfectly clear to the attendees I spoke to who attended the ITA/Smart Tan seminars that no "third rail" topics (like sunlamp compatibility) were allowed to be discussed. [Note: Isn't the ability to discuss "third rail" topics (like "lotion diversion" at the last Chicago trade show) what trade shows are supposed to be about so that we can reach a "consensus"?] 8. Nashville Comment #8: A LARGE number of salon owners "whispered" in Ask Don's ear that perhaps it is time for tanning salon owners to start thinking about "taking back" THEIR trade show! These folks point out that the vendors are spending the profits of the show on political purposes while tanning salon owners want the profits spent for scientific research. [Note: What do YOU think?] The "bottom line" is that the planning for next years show starts ASAP and so we must make our views known to ITA/Smart Tan NOW! Let me know what YOU think. Don "Ask Don Want YOU To Get Involved!" Smith PS: I forgot to add my suggestion to get rid of the "freebie vulture" congestion. 9. Nashville Comment #9: Let's petition ITA/Smart Tan to move the companies (mostly lotion) who are (1) giving away free samples, and/or, (2) having someone sign autographs to a separate area away from the main trade show floor. That way, the people who are there for "professional" discussions won't have to put up with those who are only there to get enough "freebies" to pay for their trip! _________________ [ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-11-12 09:34 ][ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-11-12 09:35 ] |

Don, I asked Chunn if we could get a HEADING on the front page of this Website, so these campaigns could be posted in everyones view. He spoke favorably of the idea. Hopefully the Banner Heading will be there soon. Where do you plan to post this E-campaign? |

Rep Power: 0 | John from URI made a suggestion that I thought was great about lotion samples. He suggested that the ITA get all the vendors together to make an "ITA Bag" with samples of all the vendors products and you get one at the door of the trade show and no more. Punch out their badge so you can eliminate the problem of people getting multiple samples. It would save the vendors money, and ensure that everyone gets new products to try. As it is now, most upscale salon owners do not have the time and refuse to wait in line for 2 hours with the rest of the vultures for the privilege of trying a company's new products. But I'm sure the ITA would be totally against that since that would be too efficient and deter salon owners from bringing hordes of their employees, sons/daughters/cousins and bums they picked off the street to get freebies. After all, their main selling point for the show is not to learn, but to get enough freebies to pay for their whole trip! _________________ [ This Message was edited by: Carla Plazas on 2002-11-12 13:40 ][ This Message was edited by: Carla Plazas on 2002-11-12 13:40 ] |

Rep Power: 0 | Don, thank you for the talk. I was upset to see so few salon owners because I for only one know the importance of what you do... I can't believe that so few others do as well. For those that did attend... pat yourselves on your back because you represent the elite of the elite in caring about improving not only yourselves but also the industry you have chose. We CAN get together for a single purpose, We CAN work together for a single goal. From what I saw, you have a core of VERY dedicated followers. Now, as befits me as Mori, I have a complaint. Don, as much as you are making a slow comeback to TanToday, the slow is TOO SLOW. Sure, they tend to give a harder time, but your dividends could be greater in ROI. It is necessary now for you to collect a database of EVERYONES" e-mail. When you have the next e-mail campaign... send out the message and we will respond !!! |

Rep Power: 23 | Don, thankyou for the talk. I am not upset to see so few salon owners there because I am not the only one that knows the importance of what you do...I am sure others like myself DID want to be there but couldn't...I do however hope that the talk was video taped...I will purchase one because I do want to support the research institute...I do want to be part of Don's Army. I don't want to be elite of elite of anything. |

Rep Power: 22 | Don, where did you post that Shape Magazine E-campaign? I wanted to participate in it. And where the heck did I see a link to your PowerPoint of the Saturday meeting? I seem to have lost track of it. |
