Rep Power: 26 | FYI To Ask Don's Army: Solarmeter Steve is going to LOVE an article by Brian Diffey, Ph.D., titled "Sources and measurement of ultraviolet radiation" that was published in the September, 2002 issue of "Methods" magazine [28 (1) 4]. The concluding sentence of the abstract stated that "The complete way to characterize an UV source is by spectroradiometry, ALTHOUGH FOR MOST PRACTICAL PURPOSES A DETECTOR OPTICALLY FILTERED TO RESPOND TO A LIMITED PORTION OF THE SPECTRUM NORMALLY SUFFICES." Thus, if you are using a hand-held radiometer correctly and controll all of the variables (and you can learn how to do so on 11/9/2002 at my talk), you can obtain results that are valid for "practical purposes" through the use of hand-held radiometers. Will a hand-held radiometer take the place of a spectroradiometer? No. But, as Dr. Diffey stated, for most "practical purposes" a hand-held radiometer "normally suffices". But, what would happen if the hand-held radiometer was specifically "calibrated" to correlate with a spectroradiometer? The answer to this question will be answered on 11/9/02! Rep Power: 23 | Don, Is there an on-line link to that article? Or where can I go buy the magazine? Think I'll send him a free MED meter for that comment! Last year in Photonics Spectra (which I get in the Mail), NIST published an article "Avoiding Errors in UV Radiation Measurements" by T.C. Larason. It slammed accuracy of handheld meters in general, but the examples they gave had different spectral responses than mine do. I sent them an email saying "You talkin' about me?" - but they never replied. |

Rep Power: 23 | Quote: ________________________________________ _____________ A DETECTOR OPTICALLY FILTERED TO RESPOND TO A LIMITED PORTION OF THE SPECTRUM NORMALLY SUFFICES." ________________________________________ _____________ Another reason I'd like to have Dr. Diffey evaluate Model 7.0 is that it is filtered to respond to the ENTIRE EAS spectrum from below 280 nm up to 400 nm (not a PORTION of it). The response curve (you have a copy) has slight deviations from ideal EAS... but remains the closest of any broadband ones I've ever seen - including very expensive ones. Technically - if it exactly followed the curve, it would yield exactly what a spectroradiometer does - to any and all UV light sources. I'm not sure "matching" it to several different kinds of spectrometer results from various beds wouldn't confuse people who depend on identical (or very close) values from Solarmeter to Solarmeter. But I look forward to hearing your ideas on this at Nashville. Anyhoo - thanks for the Diffey comment. That calls for an after dinner drink or two, starting now ^_^ |

Rep Power: 26 | Steve: I used a Model 7.0 (that I had "tweaked" to match the 754 and the "real-time" spectroradiometers) and the correlation was less than a minute in difference. Don PS: I e-mailed you the abstract of the article and the "links". |

Rep Power: 26 | Christine: "The question is," said Alice, "Whether you can make words mean so many different things." "The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be the master - that's all." [Lewis Carroll: Through the Looking Glass VI] Thus, Miss Cub Reporter, one of my "objectives" on 11/9 is to help you, and the other attendees, understand and "master" the words Steve and I use. Think about it this way. Solarmeter Steve and I aren't the sharpest tacks in the bulletin board and so if two dummies like us can learn these "words" so can everyone else!
