FYI To Ask Don's Army:

As many of you know, I have recommended that tanning salon owners give financial support to the websites we patronize in order to free them from the need to be dependant upon selling banner ads to vendors.

I think that this is necessary because the industry websites are the last bastion of free speech.

So maybe the answer is to have the contribution be voluntary and to have those who contribute recognized in some way (perhaps in their signature line).
That way, those of us who are concerned about keeping the internet free from financial pressure by the GOBN can authorize the websites we patronize to bill an agreed upon amount each month and those who don't want to won't have to pay anything.

Note to Michael: Set up an EFT program and I'll give you a credit card number to bill me.

If 500 people agree to pay $10.00 per month, this website will not be dependant upon banner ads.

I would agree to pay. This is a great idea we need to explore.

I wonder though, how mahy people would actually open their wallets?

I would also pay...I think that it would be a step in the right direction...although I am also weary of how many people would commit and be a part of this change!

This is not about finacial support only! We need participation from all sides of the industry. Cleaning up our act is the only way we will get this participation. If you want to support finacially that is great, but this is about way more than that. We know that most ITA and manufacturers read the boards, we want them to join in and give their insight to our industry. If we can agree to disagree in a professional manner then I think they would do this. I may be wrong but I am hoping to get their participation to make our industry grow in the right direction. We need eveyone to fight the anti-tan bodies.

Don:

I Have been proposing that those who get the most benefit from the sites should help pay the tab if they want them to hold true to the mission of serving salon owners best interests. Have met much derision and laughter from naysayers over this, but maybe now is the time...

Best wishes with your proposal.

Blah, blah, blah.

BUY A BANNER, take the heat, come on and play with your customers guys.

Time to grow up, and join the online thing, sheesh.

You take questions face to face at the shows, what is the difference with taking them in print?

THAT one I've never understood.

And besides, supporting the sites with a banner and YOUR online participation is good for your bottom line.

Start today.

Don and I have talked about this and I agree that the site should be FREE for most areas. We come up with other areas that would benefit a salon owner and they pay for that part of the site.

This would allow for a non-partisan atmosphere.

This could be but not limited to online training of your staff.

I like $9.88 per month.

What would you expect to get for $9.88 per month for you to get your monies worth?

What about this site's support of Big Dog??
You try to destroy the livelihood of distributors by taking sides with this new distributor (show me the difference!!) and then you have the unmittigated gall to condemn those that are willing to pay for a banner to support this freedom of thought and speach???? Just how much does Big Dog pay for their advertising on this site?? Do they pay the same as the other distributors? Do they pay at all???

Yes, I'm all for free speach, but who pays the costs for the medium that promotes and runs the site?

NOTHING IS FREE.

Question is.... can the website owner/operator afford to continue to provide the website without the support of the vendors? I don't know what it cost to provide this site each month, but if Salon owner contributions were low, would it be enough to cover the cost?

How do you propose to make the transition from where it is today to a wholly Salon supported site, and ensure uninterrupted service?

Sorry... Nobody is going to pay for what they can get for free.

Salons are not going to pay for internet based information, chat, or even research and discussion, as long as free sites are out there, anywhere...

Only a few vendors actually pay for banners.

With new discussion sites popping up all the time. Most are willing to run free banners to 'prove' themselves. Some are still trying to prove themselves after several years..... Cheapskates abuse that situation, and paying vendors don't want to pay for what is being given away to others for free... So....

Where does that leave us? This medium turns out to be a GREAT SERVICE to be offered by a vendor (like chunn, or Lucas - where stc started, ), or a great political tool for those politically savvy types who are running for office of some kind or another ( buddy bru! ).

But the bottom line is that the online community is a TREMENDOUSLY valuable asset to members of its community, and the industry as a whole, even though it is not a sustainable business model unless you can design, produce graphics, do the programming, and marketing, as a one man army... etc....
