Rep Power: 0 | Many of my clients say they come here to relax. I suspect that a tanning session is more than just 20 minutes without a phone ringing. Does the uv exposure stimulate endorphines or something that triggers a relaxation response? Checkered flag icon because I'm from Indy |

Rep Power: 23 | I love it... laying in a nice warm bed with a cool breeze on me...... naked. I don't know about the endorphins thing b/c there isn't any real increase in heart rate or pulse or anything.... but I love laying in a tanning bed for 20 minutes after a long day of work and coaching. |

Rep Power: 26 | Larry/M & C: Dr. Holick has published papers showing the stimulation of beta-endorphins (like you get from a "runners high") from a tanning bed so that has to be part of the equation. However, my research has convinced me that there is more, much more, to the benefits of sensible, moderate and responsible UVR exposure that we do not completely understand today. Our species would not have survived here on earth if we weren't able to " efficiently process" the energy making up the electromagnetic spectrum from sunlight. My son who is (hopefully!!!) in the last year of getting his Ph.D in molecular biology tells me that UVR is part of the cellular "signalling process" and that these signals are undoubtedly very important to the process of homeostasis. He brought to my attention the fact that "things happen" when UVR strikes the skin other than the process of the development of facultative pigmentation. Thanks to his guidance, I have uncovered a number of papers dealing with the important and beneficial "signalling" effects of UVR. We are also learning more and more about the "mediating effects" of vitamin D on a host of dread diseases. Could it be that this seco-steroid hormone is also important to our "mood" and mental wellbeing in the same way that it is important to our physical wellbeing? One last thing. I want to hear more about Marty's "1972 flashback......." THAT sounds like the story of the year. LOL Chica/Mitzi: I'd like to have a dollar for every female client who tells me that the 20 minutes in a sunbed are the only time during the day where she isn't doing something for her (1) boss, (2)husband, or, (3) kids. That's why (in addition to a free birthday tan) we have a yearly "bad day free tan" that our clients can use at their discretion. Nothing like a free tan to make a horrible day better! All: Finally (and PLEASE don't tell anyone about this!) I have made a significant discovery about another (until now) hidden benefit of UVR exposure. It acts as an aphrodisiac. From my own experience, I know I have a bundle of energy after a tan session. Some say that it makes them sleepy. Not me. I get energized.... Quote:Finally (and PLEASE don't tell anyone about this!)
