FYI To Ask Don's Army:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced this week that American women are getting more folic acid (folate), a vitamin that can help prevent serious birth defects (like spina bifida).

When over one thousand women were surveyed, it was found that the average blood level of folic acid in women of child-bearing age had almost tripled from 1988 to 2000. This encouraging change was brought about by the fact that cereal grains and other foods have been supplemented with folate starting in 1998.

Why is this information important to the PROTECTIVE PIGMENTATION industry?

1. Because the anti-UVR segment of the dermatology community likes to "claim" that UVR will "degrade" circulating folic acid levels in order to "scare" women of child-bearing age so badly that they won't tan indoors or outdoors.

[Note: I think that you would agree that if they were able to scare away 10% to 20% of our "core" clients (i.e., women of child-bearing age), it would be extremely serious!]

Keep in mind that this claim by the dermatologists IS ABSOLUTELY NOT based on the latest scientific facts. Click on the link below and print out an article we put together that totally refutes this "dermatological nonsense" and keep copies handy in case this subject comes up in your area.

2. The Washington D.C. law firm that "led the way" in forcing FDA to allow folate supplementation in foods is also the attorney for NAATSO. The folic acid case was one of the reasons we selected them.
