Rep Power: 26 | FYI To Ask Don's Army: First of all, I would like to thank the 16 individuals who took the time to support my effort to get Health Canada to respond to my questions. Working together, we DID make a difference! Next, I would like to point out that the Health Canada "response" posted below proves that our E-Message Campaigns CAN get results! This, ladies and gentlemen is the REAL power of the internet community if we use it correctly. Listed below is the response from Robert. P Bradley of Health Canada: To: Naatso@aol.com From: Robert P Bradley/HC-SC/GC/CA@HWC cc: Yvon Deslauriers/HC-SC/GC/CA@HWC, Pascale Reinhardt/HC-SC/GC/CA@HWC Mr. Smith, I have reviewed your notes sent to my staff as indicated in your message below. The questions posed are considered your response to and comments on the proposed regulatory amendments to the Radiation Emitting Devices Act and as such will be answered as part of the consolidated reply that will be sent to all those who responded to the initial note forwarded April 22, 2002. I would welcome any further more detailed comments, and while there is a deadline of August 31, I would be happy to accept any comments that arrive within a reasonable time shortly thereafter. It is our intent to review all submissions and prepare as expeditiously as possible, as I stated above, a single consolidated reply for distribution to all. Given the level of response, I expect this will be no earlier then the end of October. In this reply we will address all questions and comments made and indicate the next steps in the process. There is one item that you raised that speaks to the process that is followed in this country regarding introduction of Regulations and I would like to respond to it. There is a formal, structured approach to the development of Regulations that is similar to, but not identical with, that followed in the United States of America. Fundamental to the process is the requirement to consult with stakeholders and this is the process that was initiated by the request for written comments. There are a variety of means available to us such as the current request for written comments, with focus groups and stakeholder meetings being examples of other methods. Clearly in our system, no one method precludes subsequently following up with one of the other approaches. We decided at the beginning that the most effective way of getting the broadest response to the proposal was to use this initial request of wriiten comments and as stated in the May 1, 2002 reply to you, we are not ruling the possibility of a face to face meeting as a step in the next phase of this project. Sincerely, ______________________ Robert P Bradley Director Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau Phone: (613) 954-6701 Fax: (613) 952-7584 Some comments: Now we know that (1) the questions I have previously submitted will be "part of the consolidated reply" which should reach us in October, 2002; (2) that "while there is a deadline of August 31, I would be happy to accept any comments that arrive within a reasonable time shortly thereafter"; and, (3) "There is a formal, structured approach to the development of Regulations that is similar to, but not identical with, that followed in the United States of America." I will be submitting a formal response to Mr. Bradley's letter of April 22, 2002 and some comments regarding the Health Canada "Guidelines for Tanning Salon Owners and Users" and my comments will be posted in the new International Regulatory section.
