FYI To Ask Don's Army:

In order to compensate for the difficulty of getting the media to cover a point of view that was not embraced by the management of the media outlet, activists use actions such as demonstrations, blockades, pickets, protest marches and meetings in order to get their message out to the public.

Activism is a means of:

1. Involving people in a the meaningful experience of challenging unjust laws or actions.

2. Demonstrating to others the depth of commitment felt by an affinity group about an issue.

3. Obtaining publicity.

4. Applying pressure on politician, regulators, bureaucrats, etc.

In the early days of activism, it took commitment and a lot of hard work for an affinity group to get their point across.

The internet has changed all that.

Now, from the comfort of your home, you can make your voice heard at all levels of government and society!

Thats why we created the Ask Don's Army e-Message Section and why we tried to make it as easy as possible for you to voice your protest on a given issue. All you have to do is "click" on this section at the top of the Ask Don Forum and click on the e-Message you want to send. Then, you can add your comments to those that have already been "preformatted" and, after adding your name, salon name and e-mail address, all you have to do is click on the "submit" (send) buttton.

Become an "online activist" and do YOUR part!

Activism vs Negotiation: Can They Coexist?

1. Activism aims to stimulate public debate while negotiation tends to inhibit it because, usually, negotiation takes place behind closed doors.

2. Activism seeks to create a "sense of urgency" while negotiation must, of necessity, takes longer.

In the USA, we have what I choose to call "Active Negotiation" because FDA rules call for "negotiations" to take place in public forums. And, because FDA has been receptive to our pleas, we have not had to resort to active activism.

In Canada, on the other hand, I believe that activism will be required since Health Canada chooses to (1) operate in secret, and, (2) refuses to answer legitimate requests for information.

The situation in Australia/New Zealand is even worse. The "standards" that were agreed to are onerous and the anti-tanning coalition has the indoor tanning industry on the run. Thus, a VERY ACTIVE activism will be required to reverse the damage already done.

Most European countries formulate regulations in secret and then do nothing to enforce them. This is the worst of all possible worlds.

My "dream" is that we can get first 100 and then 1,000 individuals who will use the Ask Don e-Message format to support our various campaigns. This means "On Line Activism" can help put the regulators "on notice" that the indoor tanning industry, WHICH IS A $12 BILLION INDUSTRY, will negotiate when possible and will become active when required.

Think about it. From the comfort of your home, you can add your weight to help our peers in Canada and Australia/New Zealand! The internet has made it possible for us all to become activists.

For instance, several weeks ago I sent Health Canada a list of questions that I was told would be promptly answered. To date I have had no response. I have sent Robert P. Bradley of Health Canada an e-mail requesting answers so that I can formulate a regulatory response by the August 31, 2002 deadline. Thus, it would be helpful if you would "click" on the link below and send Mr. Bradley an e-Message (1) adding your weight to my request for information, and, (2) showing that you support our Canadian peers.

Working together, we CAN make a difference!
