FYI To Ask Don's Army:

This is a response I made to a question on another website that I thought might be of interest to you.

Don

Sheila:

Remember the Watergate credo of "follow the money" to see what happened (nah, you are too young) ?

The same thing is true here.

The ITA "took control" of the trade shows in order to get access to the money that gives them their power.

Now, ask yourself this question. Why should an organization controlled by manufacturers control the trade shows that SHOULD BE controlled by tanning salon owners? In NO OTHER INDUSTRY that I am aware of (certainly not the medical industry) do the manufacturers control the trade shows!

And ask yourself some other questions. Is the "qualilty" of the education at LV and Nashville what it should be? Are real, live tanning salon owners involved in the planning (like there was in Chicago) of the educational program? Are there any "third rail" topics of interest to salon owners (like sunlamp compatibility) discussed at LV and Nashville?

The answers to these questions is "NO" as you know!

So, what tanning salon owner must do is organize their own trade show and "invite" the manufacturers to exhibit (do you REALLY think that they will "boycott" attending once they realize that doing so will be business suicide?). The "hallmark" of the Tanning Salon Owners Trade Show will be an education program for and by tanning salon owners!

The "profit" that will be made can be used for conducting research like we are doing and to support a NAC.

The "bottom line" question is WHO will better use the proceeds of the trade shows. Personally, I vote for tanning salon owners because what is happening now IS NOT in our best interests!

This IS the answer but I don't know if tanning salon owners have enough "togetherness" YET to make it work but someday they will. After all, Sheila, WE have the power of the checkbook!

well don that is just that money. I can (maybe) put together a trade show, but who am I.

My first trade show was chicago, and I miss it one becasue it was close, I only wnt ot the floor becasue we were just starting and puretan invited us to check them out.

who and what did ohio? that I am sure on a lot of accounts was a flop. Maybe they were not trying to make it big. I enjoyed it, but it was nothing.

Yes tanning salons need to be involved, I am sure that if I called max and said hi this is Rebekah of Yucatan Tanning salon and I am having a killer trade show how big do you want your booth?

lets just do another chicago ok?!

Becka:

The "seminal issue" for tanning salon owner is whether they are the dog or the tail!

- We have the "power of the checkbook" but we don't use it wisely!

- We aren't happy with the "status quo" but we don't do anything to change it!

- We are the "experts" regarding tanning the public and it is time we step forward and let the manufacturers know this fact of life!

IF we want to make a "yummy" omelette, we have to be willing to break a few eggs!

I would vote YES if it was close to Disney.

Don, You are absolutely correct. It would be no problem to have our own trade show. It would be a small deal to begin with, but with every passing year when the word gets out it will grow and grow. The cost would be covered the same way the big trade shows are funded. Each salon would pay a fee that would cover the room and vendors would pay a fee to display their wares. The great part would be the meeting of the minds of owners if there were no manufacturors around. We have an adgenda and should promote it. Florida, particularly Central Florida, has a wealth of convention space.

Don.... you often are the wise man to my wise *** ~

And I was flabbergasted at the fact that my passionate lotion boy Greg from Soaking could have been the Sage that knew it all along ~ and my response to your STC post is below...... the cause keeps getting hosed down by liquid dissappointment ~

So Greg from Soaking is right??????

Ahhhhh Don~

in my head I know you are right....

in my heart I am saddened cause I really really believe that ALL industry players will be needed to successfully battle the Anti~Tan coalitions . . . .

Goofy that the B*tch of the Boards really does advocate the 'group hug' huh??? Unity within the Community has to include the entire roster . . .

I guess with this latest failure of support from the MFG/Industry Organizations ~ ~ we can only look to ourselves for survival.

While I wholeheartedly acknowledge and support the premise that a Salon Owners Show is neccessary - - - I have to be honest in saying that it hurts the 'unity in the community' . . . it again puts us in that us against them .....

But after this latest dissappointment ~ it may just be the only way . . . . . I was joking about holding a tupperware party and a tasteful treasures party at Nashville so that real learning could take place and give people an alternative to George and Erin....

Don- are you offering more than a suggestion here?

Is Greg from Soaking up the Rays really a common sense guru that I was too stupid to see???

And where does one find the 'un-corruptable souls' to take on this baby??

Sheila

Almost losing hope and desire for this freeking thing to move forward ~ like it should.

Becky - - at this time of the year.... a true show is hard to schedule to coincide with Nashville - - and in all Honesty... I would not want to cause harm to the MFGs that already spent big ching to be part of the Nashville show........ However ~ if Don and (greg and you guys....) decide that Salon owners will need to work on this together - - and really release the mental need for the ITA to do it for you.... count me in! Please choose a place that is FUN and does not shut down at midnite for keyrissst sake!!! Hmmmmmm Labor Day Weekend....... seems like a sassy time of the year...... slow in the salons....still nice weather to be had..... cheeeeep deals to beach places Don........ask Rich C to organize the place - - he is a good boy!!!

But... what if only 8-25 people came? Isn't that about how many 'active' on-liners there really are?
