I cannot believe it!!!! Since it has slowed down significantly the past few weeks I have caught my employees outside of the salon numerous times during their shift, leaving the salon unattended with 2-3 clients in beds. I put up a posting that anyone caught outside of salon while punched in will be terminated immediately. Two of my salons are in strip malls and they are running down to the soda machine, next door to the pizza place, 3 doors down to Dairy Queen, to the newspaper machine, and my biggest pet peeve out the back door smoking. Very few of them work more than a 4 hour shift, I would never think to go running the neighborhood while on shift. And if they are doing it when I am there, what are they doing when I'm not???
I really cannot even believe this has become an issue!!!!!

Sounds like most of the salon abandonment is for food and drink items. Maybe if you have the space I'd talk to the owner about bringing in a drink machine stock it yourself (more $'s in your pocket) and if it's food have your employees ask the restaurant to deliver it to the salon. Most places will if you are within their strip. Our employees buy several drinks when they are here on shift so it's worthwhile for us to provide them. Clients like it too. There is a pizza place and a nice restaurant in our strip, both will deliver to us if we call in an order. We have a fridge and microwave but sometimes we'd rather have soemthing else. I agree it's a problem but maybe this could help keep the employees happy and them in your salon where they should be.

I guess this really isn't the same scenario, but I have to add my two cents.

I normally don't "run the neighborhood" as you call it. But, I do leave the salon unattended on occasion to run next door and get something to eat. But again, I'm at the salon from 8-12 hours at a time with no relief.

But, I do understand where you are coming from. All of our part-timers are aware that if you smoke you must do it out back. We found out that one of our part-timers was sitting on the front curb where everyone pulls up smoking a cigarette in her low rider jeans. Several people said that when you would walk past her you could see the crack of her *** because her jeans were so low. Needless to say, she's gone.

Here's a suggestion..buy a small refrigerator to keep cold drinks, salads, etc. We have one and a microwave, toaster oven. Like several owners...I spend 9-12 hours here and do not have the luxury of leaving. Think about a used refrig. I bet you could get one under $100.00. For me, it saves $25-$40.00 a week. Sending out for lunch / dinner can be costly and fattening!

I can only imagine your frustration. My feelings are...If you want to give away visits or lotins....open your own salon! Same goes for leaving store unattended or closing early. Hang in there.

We have a refridgerator and microwave for them to use. We bought them brand new when opening each salon. I even have boxes of plastic forks and spoons in case you forget your own.

I don't think it is approprate for any employee to leave the store unattended. They are being paid to work. Not run errands. For a 4 hour shift anyone should be fine without having to run out to get something to eat or drink. Especially if you offer a fridge. What about if the phone rings? What if someone has a problem with the bed? Your employees should stay IN the store.[ This Message was edited by: Becky on 2002-07-25 12:27 ]

Thanks Becky, I am glad someone else shares my opinion. One other thing that I did forget is that we also have a water fountain if they are "DYING of THIRST".
