Rep Power: 26 | FYI To Ask Don's Army: An article in the July, 2002 issue of the American Journal of Public Health titled "Use of topical sunscreens and the risk of malignant melanoma: a meta-analysis of 9067 patients from 11 case-control studies" by Huncharek and Kupelnick support my premise that sunlight, but not UVR, induces (causes) melanoma. The "Results" of the study showed that "Combining studies that used non-heterogeneous data yielded a summary RR (relative risk) of 1.01, incicating no association between sunscreen use and development of melanoma." Thus, since sunscreens "protect" against UVR wavelengths and there is no effect either way (protection or cause), this indicates that UVR is not associated with the induction of CMM (cutaneous malignant melanoma). Therefore, since we know that there is an "association" between certain "genetic factors" and sunlight exposure and melanoma, it follows that wavelengths other than UVR must be involved. As mentioned previously, evidence is mounting that the "nducing" wavelengths are the thermal IR (infrared) wavelengths that are found in sunlight (but not in tanning beds). Rep Power: 23 | Scoop: heating blankets found to be primary cause of CMM ! After wondering for decades why CMM appears on so many non-sun exposed 'trunk' and 'foot' areas, scientists finally put 2 & 2 together today. It turns out there was a 99.99% correlation between subjects use of heating blankets and CMM... snuggling up under the cozy IR emitting covers in the winter months. This also explains why CMM is found among northern hemisphere residents where 'the sun don't shine', or at least not with strong UVR. Source: I made the whole thing up. But it wouldn't suprise me if an undiscovered link actually exists. Ha-ha.. I should post this on the weather.com site just for fun! Nah. |
