FYI:

A friend of Ask Don (whose company prohibits his/her participation on-line) sent an e-mail asking what I thought about the proliferation of new websites. Was this a "revolution" or a "evolution" my friend wanted to know.

Ask Don thinks that the recent proliferation of new websites is GREAT!

Why?

1. Because each of the new websites will bring new people "on-line" who have an "affinity" with the "new" website and they will "explore" the other industry websites to see what is being offered.

2. The existence of new websites (competition) will force all of the existing websites to become better if they want to survive.

3. The fact that the new websites are trying to "eliminate" some of the "trashing and burning" that took place "over there" has had the effect of "toning down" you know where (and that is good!).

Competition is a good thing!

What will cause some of the websites to thrive and prosper and some of them to flounder and not catch on?

CONTENT!

As more and more tanning salon owners get "wired", the importance of providing "content" will become critical.

That's why "content driven" websites like www.tantalk.com and www.naatso.org will be around when the "shake out" is completed. AND, the other websites will have to work harder in order to provide meaningful content.

What changes will the "on-line" evolution/revolution mean to vendors?

They will increase their advertising "on-line" and decrease their advertising in the four trade publications. Why? Simple! because on-line advertising is more "cost effective" and the "results" are more immediate from the start of a campaign to the end. [Note: Look for the "astute" vendors to have "time critical" specials that they will advertise on-line whereby you will have a narrow "window of time" to take advantage of their offer.]

The "bottom line" is that the rapid proliferation of websites signals BOTH an evolution AND a revolution in the way we communicate. And both trends are good.

Some advice (unsolicited) from Ask Don.

QUIT LURKING AND BECOME PART OF THE ON-LINE EVOLUTION/REVOLUTION! TODAY! RIGHT NOW!

Duh.

Um...

Err....

Who was the REASON that Don Smith LEFT TanToday for unprofessionalism? One name please. And who is the head moderator where?

Um...

Err...

Who was the WORST company trasher going, and the head cynic. One name please. And what is the new motto of another site? Protect people from bash/trash/slash?

Scuuuzzze me for noticing these things.

But one thing is for certain, the unnamed site that everyone hates, AND CONTINUE TO PATRONIZE with 75% of the traffic, will continue to do EXACTLY what made it #1.

I wish them all well. But they are in for RUDE awakenings at how much work it really is, how much the VENDORS will now hate THEM TOO, despite their best efforts at being nice, and how much money they will dump into this, AND endless hours.

Looks easy. Ain't.

Instead of playing who let the dogs out, you should be giving out boots after those posts. You know darn well the posts "over there" are exactly the same as when the two other boards were not. I won't even bother calling you on the other misinformation.

Look, either pass out boots for us to use to wade through your BS or pass around whatever you're smoking. Must be a pretty color sky in your world......

Bruce:

You should take pride that "all your children" are out on their own. LOL

Don,
You know that Bruce can't help it...It is his nature.
What I hope the new sites will do is exactly what you said....generate new onliners and increase the quality of content.
The new generations o to speak will be stronger by ways of they learned what NOT to do from the older sites. (IE:otherboard.com)
Good luck to all. and keep on posting!

~ Don . . . sorry but I do have to disagree with one premise here . . .

3. The fact that the new websites are trying to "eliminate" some of the "trashing and burning" that took place "over there" has had the effect of "toning down" you know where (and that is good!).

1~ TT was not the only site to Trash and Burn ~ it still is not . . . the toning down was a process of it's own evolution - - - the revolution was the result bad decisions and senseless behavior.

2~ TT's loss has been the gain of ALL the boards . . . and the further dividing force of all the boards as well. Your friend went to the wrong source for the 'real dirt' as you already stated ~ you shine with Science. . . and the Merry Band shines with flair.

Bruce: M & C are lucky to have Mike/Rod . . . and I would appreciate it if you would not disrespect a former Moderator that brought many eyeballs to your site . . . It is not Rod's behavior that is suspect here ~ rather those that shunned him and their conversion.

Don: Do not dispute with the #1 Site Owner the validity of why TT is number 1 . . . and do not over value any other site in this current contest of who can spit the farthest with out getting smacked by mom . . .

Each board provides a service to the participants and lurkers . . . . I owe a ton to TanToday.Com and Bruce ~ ~

I miss what it was.

I am 'all over' the boards but have committed to helping Larry @ TanTomorrow.Com because I love the monster ~ I am saddened that Bruce is unhappy with me for this . . .

Evolution implies a growth towards perfection . . . Revolution implies blood, murder and mayhem . . . . .

It is simply a reaction to an action.

No black magic . . . no cell division.

Let's move on.

We are very lucky indeed to have ANY Moderators much less the quality of Mike, Mark, Michael and now Tommie.

We think...no we know....that when this all plays out, when ALL online communities can band together shed their differences and unite for common causes that can bring this industry to new levels will the true power of online be discovered.

That day approaches with each keyboard strike.

We are not trying to COMPETE with other boards but rather trying to unify their goals.

From what cooperation I have seen early on this process has already started.
