FYI:

The false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated "claim" that "80% of a person's lifetime exposure to UVR takes place before the age of 18" is raising it's ugly head again.

Listed below is an article from the TSO website ( www.naatso.org ) ("Hot News" section) that provides evidence that you can use to prove that this "claim" by the anti-tanning segment of the anti-tanning segement of the dermatology community is not true.

[Note: IF the dermatology community has facts to prove that my contention is wrong, and IF they have scientific documentation to prove that 80% of a person's lifetime exposure DOES take place before the age of 18, they should by all means respond to the "challenge" listed below.]

FYI:

In a recent Newsweek article on skin cancer, the statement was made that "Protecting kids is critical, say doctors, BECAUSE ABOUT 80 PERCENT OF LIFETIME SUN EXPOSURE HAPPENS BY THE AGE OF 18" and this statement has become a widely accepted "fact" even though it is a "false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated" claim without validity.

Thanks to an associate in Washington, DC, I was able to "track down" the original article that the "80% in 18 years" claim comes from. Here's what the article REALLY said.

The seminal article for the "80% claim" was by Stern, et al, in an article titled "Risk Reduction for Non-melanoma Skin Cancer With Childhood Sunscreen Use" that was published in the May, 1986 issue of the Archives of Dermatology.

The authors stated in their abstract that:

"Using a mathematical model based on epidemiologic data, we quantified the potential benefits of using a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 15 and estimate that regular use of such a sunscreen during the first 18 years of life would reduce the lifetime incidance of these tumors by 78%."

IT WAS NEVER stated in this article that 80% of the lifetime sunlight exposure comes in the first 18 years of life!

What Stern, et al, REALLY said was that, IF you use a sunscreen with a SPF of 15 DURING THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF LIFE, you MIGHT reduce your lifetime "risk" of developing a non-melanoma (Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma) by 78% (almost 80%!). That is FAR DIFFERENT from saying (and proving!) that 80% of a person's exposure to UVR comes in their first 18 years of life!

Thus, we have exposed yet another "myth" paraded as a "fact" by the anti-tanning segment of the dermatology community (who know, or ought to know, better!) and the media (who are too lazy to research the veracity of the "handouts" given them by the dermatology community).

So, folks, the statement that "80% of the lifetime sunlight exposure takes place in the first 18 years of life" is not based upon the scientific evidence; rather, it is based upon the need by the anti-tanning segment of the dermatology community to "demonize" any and all "required for life" exposure to UVR for "vested interest" financial reasons. (Hopefully one day the media will "wake up" and realize that they have been "used as pawns" by the dermatology community to provide free advertising for their services under the "guise" of educating the public about skin cancer.)

[A PUBLIC CHALLENGE: I hereby challenge the dermatology community and/or the media to provide scientific documentation to substantiate the false, deceptive, misleading and scientifically unsubstantiated "claim" that 80% of a person's lifetime exposure to UVR occurs before the age of 18. IT IS PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME!]

The scientific evidence INCREASINGLY supports the premise that the incontrovertible benefits of sensible, moderate and responsible exposure to UVR outweigh the minimal and manageable risks involved. Moreover, both the risks of overexposure to UVR and the risks of underexposure to UVR must be considered in order to develop a balanced public health recommendation. Since there are 100 individuals who die prematurely each year because of UNDEREXPOSURE to UVR for every 1 who dies prematurely because of OVEREXPOSURE to UVR, it is obvious that our public health policy should encourage an increased exposure to UVR, not sun (UVR) avoidance as recommended by the dermatology community.

Hopefully, the media will someday recognize that the indoor tanning industry is part of the solution , not part of the problem!

Don't EVER Sunburn! (Don't OVEREXPOSE!)

AVOID Sun (UVR) Avoidance! (Don't UNDEREXPOSE!)

Don,
What if you only live to be 20?:)
Thanks for the ammo. This is what I try to teach my debate class, always go to the primary source, always verify your facts, and always document those facts.
Rock on Don!

Jim:

You have touched on a point that, perhaps, many people in the indoor tanning industry do not know.

That is the fact that, notwithstanding the fact that they have been invited, the anti-tanning segment of the dermatology community has not had the courage to attend ANY of the last 5 FDA meetings that have been convened to discuss tanning issues!

Why have they failed to attend?

Because if they had "showed up" it would have been completely "transparent" to ANYONE with half of a brain that THE ANTI-TANNING SEGMENT OF THE DERMATOLOGY COMMUNITY HAS NO EVIDENCE TO BACK UP THEIR DAMAGING STATEMENTS!

They "trade on" and "abuse" the power that having a medical degree conveys. But keep in mind that those who have a medical degree are charged to "first do no harm" and that means that the dermatology community MUST start telling the truth about the incontrovertible benefits of sensible, moderate and responsible exposure to UVR.

Them's the facts, folks!

We have am MD on our staff.. Dr. Chester Miltenberger..

He tells everyone that Indoor tanning reduses the risk of getting a sun burn.
He always says..."BURNING is bad.. tanning in moderation is good"..

I wonder why more Doctors don't think this way?

Chris
