Rep Power: 26 | Note: From time-to-time I will post information from the TSO website that I think may be of interest to you all. The info posted below is, IMHO, especially important to all of us in the indoor tanning industry. Don FYI: A FANTASTIC new paper by University of Cambridge in England researchers that was published in the scientific journal "Nature" sheds some important new light on the cause of disease. Lead author Christopher Dobson theorizes that many illnesses are caused by proteins that, for unknown reasons, misfold themselves into non-functioning (defective) and toxic shapes. These mishapen proteins "clump" together and upset the normal "molecular" functioning (i.e., the critical "signalling" process) of the cell. Interestingly, the authors believe that this "misfolding" syndrome appears to be associated with diseases that take decades to develop (like melanoma). Previously it was believed that these "molecular alterations" had to have been caused by "outside the cell" factors (like UVR). So, let's take a look at what this may mean for the indoor tanning industry. 1. Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma (CMM) takes decaded to develop. 2. The exact cause of CMM is not known. 3. UVR is "blamed" solely because there is no other "likely" suspect and medical people don't like to say that they don't know why something "bad" happens (any answer is better than no answer!). 4. The "misfolding" thesis may end up "explaining" what causes CMM. 5. Once the "cause" of CMM is known, a "cure" will soon follow! This is one of those discoveries that may well earn Dr. Dobson a Nobel Prize! Exciting stuff! Don [ This Message was edited by: Don Smith on 2002-04-04 09:59 ] |

Rep Power: 23 | Thank you Don, that is interesting and true. Too many Doctors hide behind and over use the "Any answer is better then no answer" As a result many people animals and industries get harmed until the come out with a Miraclous Finding.. "ohh BTW our Studies found out that...." Unfortunately by the time they Publicly claim that, the damage is often times done. Hey Chipp As for your comment on "Can we get back to tanning" What does madd cow have to do with Tanning issues.?? Ahhh You are frustrating. Keep the stupid crap out of Dons forum ... The TT will do thier best to do that. He doesn't need any from you. Mj |

Rep Power: 24 | I don't know what you are talking about. I am talking about proteins, that what the topic was about. _________________ TanTalk Tanning Booth MODERATOR Tanning Booths, for people that want only the very best. Rep Power: 26 | MJ: Chippp has done his homework. Some of the work done with prion diseases (like Mad Cow Disease) led to the discovery reported by Dobson and his associates. The cause of Mad Cow Disease is now thought to be these "misfolded" proteins! For you "techies" who are interested in this fascinating subject, an article with the title "Transmissible sponfiform encephalopathies and the "rogue share-holder protein" hypothesis by P.S. Sastry was published recently in Medical Hypotheses. Good observation, Chippp! Don |
