why do so many peole call and ask the price for a single tan? do they really think they will need to get a bank loan before they coem and buy one? or are they going to drive 8 miles to save a buck.
Although with 10-10-220 that is a 20 minute phone call

We have a policy that we don't give prices over the phone. We tell people we would love to give them a tour and show them our packages and equiptment. Then they can decide based on the cleanliness of our salon, our knowledgeable staff, our equiptment and our prices if they would like to tan with us. If they are just looking for the cheapest tan in town you probably don't want them anyway.

We do give prices over the phone, but handle it differently than just spitting out random figures. We ask questions before we give answers.

"Do you prefer to stand-up or lay down?" Usually will trigger questions about stand-up units from tanners who may not be familiar with tanning.

"Is this your first time tanning indoors?"

"Do you currently tan at another location?" I never ask where, but this opens the door for me to brag about how great our lamps are and how great the results our tanners see.

"How often are you planning on tanning?" This helps me to decide if they are looking for something quick or relaxing.

"Are you interested in our base units, VHR or our Super-bed?" Usually sparks comments like "I didn't know there was a difference." And 9 times out of 10 someone will want to hear about all our units, their features and benefits.

I like to close any price inquiry phone call with a mention about which packages I recommend... and then, I ask if they'd like to make an appointment. For brand new tanners, I tell them my name and tell them to ask for me. I've only had one person so far NOT make an appointment after I asked them. But, yeah... we give the prices... and a little bit more.

One more point about why I ask questions... we have a brand new salon that opened up literally ten blocks away. If they want to call and check our prices, they better have a good story. That's also why I offer to make them an appointment.

If the competition wants my prices, I'd rather give it over the phone instead of having them sneaking around the salon. I don't really want them coming in so I can give them my lotion sales pitch or have them see our customer service practices or have them see exactly how crystal clean we are. I'm not about to help them do a better job by forcing them to come to the salon to find out my prices. It's enough that they had two employees standing out front of their store yesterday enjoying a smoke for all their clients to see.

Aaahhh, this is where websites are a great tool. We ask people if they have access to the internet and refer them to our website. Of course, we explain it is best to come in so we can give tour, explain equipment, recommend package, help reach tanning goal(ie, pre-tan for vaca, wedding, prom, blind date etc.). Websites give people a "heads-up" on what to expect. Once they come into your salon they'll be impressed!! There is a post on Free Websites somewhere.

We always ask if they are tanning for a special occasion. This opens the door to find out what type of tanning goals they are trying to achieve. Once I figure out what their goals are we discuss packages that would suit their needs.
