What's your policy on allowing friends of employees to hang out at the salon? We prohibit it, but haven't really enforced it lately. Well, you guessed it, it's gotten out of hand. Went by the salon Sunday afternoon, and found an employee's friend just hanging out behind the counter.

I really don't mind if your friend stops by. But hanging out for extended periods of time, NO! Coming behind my counter, NO!

NO!I would not allow it!I don't want to be a b@#$%(to my employees, when I do have them),but once they start hanging-out behind the counter, next you know their hands are hanging-out in your cash drawer.Or when so & so goes pottie, the friend is answering the phone , greeting customers or sitting there w/their dirty feet up on the desk.Plus this makes the customer, specially if older, feel uncomfortable. The vidoestore next to me had this problem w/their young employees, some of my customers said it was so uncomfortable when they went in there & the girls where whispering & giggling & sitting up on the counter w/their legs lounged on it,unprofessional & now they will not go back. Not saying yours are that out of control, but you never Know what happens when your not there.I,like you,lay down the line about this when I hire.Haven't heard of or caught anyone ,yet, but if it does happen I would warn (if the girl was worth it),if not there's the door. Now that I'm done rambling...Have a nice evening. NOTTTTTTTTT...........
Nor do I allow their friends in the salon unless they are tanning. No phone calls either. They are told at time of hire. Also they are not allowed to bring cell phone in salon. I caught a girl last year in the back room talking on her cell phone making plans for after her shift. I told her that she could stay on her phone, just leave, and start making plans for your new job.......
I have a camera in the salon, so I see who is in salon at all times.
I love that camera....Best investment I ever made............

Must be the day for it. Just today I had a customer tell me last night there was a friend a couple of kids behind the counter with my employee and this employee is 31 years old. I confronted her when she came in and she admitted it and apologized. That's her warning, next time I guess I'll be spending another night at the salon training a new one.

Here is a sample of our visitors/personal calls policy.

*VISITORS/PACKAGE INSPECTIONS: Employees are not to have friends or relatives visit them while at work. If there is a valid reason for someone to see an employee at work they should limit their visit or personal phone call. Any employee having friends “hang out” while on the job will be subject to disciplinary actions. Employees visiting the resort on their off time do not need to behind the front desk. This gives the false impression to customers who recognize you as an employee that you are working. If you are not and don’t approach to help them, they may complain to management. At any time you are behind the desk you are considered at work and must attend to customers. All employees off the clock should not be keying themselves in to tan or to get into the register for any reason. Our management staff have retain the authority to inspect any package brought into or taken from the premises by employees.
