What kind of back-up programs do you use for your salon software? I'm thinking of getting something to do it automatically so I'll know it will be there if I ever have a problem!

Please do backup.

I knew better and didn't take the time. I sit here today with all my files on a computer that's dead in the water. I had a spare at home, but not many of my important files were on the home computer.

Came in this morning and hit the power button to start my computer, just as it started to power up, I heard a pop and now nothing. It also took out my office jet printer/copier/fax machine.

The computer is still under warranty and the shop thinks it may just be the power supply is bad, KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED that's all it is and my files are safe.

Kicking my a.. for not having things backed up. I knew better.

Ginger, I don't have my backup system on a timer. I have a zip drive attached to my computer. I save my backup on the zip disks. It normally takes about 15 minutes.

We got a new back up system that saves everything to a CD automatically sometime in the middle of the night.

Employees back up EVERY night using a zip drive. I use the utilities from Helios and it take about 2 minutes. They then lock up the disk in cupboard. I do my own backup once or twice a week and keep it with me, in case of fire etc.

We use the program "Second Copy"
with one click your files , all the files you want, are backed up to our zip drive,
we back up every night and take the disk home, never leave all your back ups at work!

Due to data lost in the past .I know have the girls back up nightly. rotate zip discs and I do the back up at least three times a week that I keep locked up. alittle over done maybe but guessing who bought what (cash)and who visits/ minutes were added back to their packages, digging thru nightly reports, sign in sheets, cc receipts, and deposit slips for checks. All for one month of missing data, That will not happen again to me. Pain in the a**.
Automatic back would save time. where can I get info?????

I back up my files onto a CD-RW. This is what I was told to use. What is the differnce in it and a CD-R? Is it ok to use the same one over and over? If not why?

Zip disks are faster then cds, we rotate 5-7 disks and do a back up every night at closing!
If it is really busy we do a back up in the middle of the day as well.
We take every second zip disk home and then bring it back a few days later and over write it, we keep a months worth of days on each disk, we use the program SECOND COPY, one click after running helios backup to the hard drive, Second copy copies from the hard drive to the zip drive, we have a months worth of days on the hard drive in its own folder and copy that to the zip disk.
So the original is on the hard drive in a folder called helios back up data, then that is copied to a zip disk.
you can never be too careful

If you want fast backups, dont take client pictures in helios, we don't use them, they take up a lot of file space.
Archive off old transactions in helios, we only keep fiscal years worth, "the last years worth"
When you do the helios "archive" you get rid of all the old transaction info, but keep any sessions and packages, and clients info.
Use archive in helios, no picture, keep you data lean and you will have FAST backups and less chance of coruption of data over all.
