I am looking into opening a second locations and I know some of you out there are multi unit operators. What are the pitfalls of operating more than one location and some of the solutions. Also how far away is to far or close to your main locations.

Since you cannot be in both places at a time make darn sure your stores are being run by trusted responsable employees. I had one younger girl once that let any of her little high school friends come in and tan free(Pre Computer check in).

Tan-U-Too is correct. Operating a salon is alot of fun but you also run across alot of employees that just want to work for you to tan free. Please be sure that whom ever you place in charge of your resorts is very trust worthy, hard working, and dependable. They should have the same concerns, interest, and desire for success as you have. They should feel as though that is their salon and manage it as such. With this type of management in place it will allow you to oversee and control the "big" picture of your business. More time to spend on issues to make your salons better than your competitors!GOOD LUCK TO YA!!!!

One thing that has helped me trying to stay on top of things is the Salon Wizard. I use my Palm VII ( A small hand held device with internet connectivity -- less than $200 bucks -- http://www.palm.com/wireless/ ) to stay on top my stores. From the Palm I can run customized reports that show areas of possible theft. I can run sales reports. I can see which sales codes are being used. Discounts begin given. What time the store opened and closed. Just about anything I need to know I can get by using the Palm! I can even edit customers accounts! I can see who's tanning on what bed! I use the palm whenever I have idle time. In the bathroom, at lunch waiting for the meal. oops, I said bathroom. You know you read while in there! Why not be checking up on your store! From the palm I can schedule what the Salon Wizard will do for me. It can automatically back up my stores data at night, automatically archive old client data, Email me with any report I want to see! When you have more than one store this really becomes necessary to keep up with what's going on! The neat thing about it is that the employees don't when I am checking numbers, etc. I have a great staff and don't suspect stealing but it's nice to have accountability for everyting we do.[ 06-24-2001: Message edited by: chunn ]
