I was just wondering how everyone feels about their employees eating at their front counters..I have a strict rule that they are not allowed to have any food other than gum or hard candy at the counter.. However I do have a room that is located right behind the counter where they can go to eat.. The door buzzes when it is opened and one of the security monitors is in there.. I just think food on the counter looks unprofessional..

I agree with you! I hate going into any place and having the person behind the counter eating while they are trying to help me. Unprofessional to say the least. But I also hate people chewing gum in that situation also. Especially if they are smacking it!

I don't like the idea of eating at the counter. But, I have a small salon. Every inch of space is used. Currently, we do not have an office or any extra space where employees or myself can eat.

We too utilize every inch of space.I tell my employees if someone does come in, just cover up their food, and PLEASE use a napkin to get the ketchup off their face.--------------------Viper Jon@phiper.fws1.com

I don't like it either, but I do eat at my counter. I open at 7:00 a.m. & have my coffee & cereal when I get to work. And I eat lunch at the counter. I do put it away when someone comes in.Also, I have employees that are at another job or school & come straight here. They need to eat & it's harder for them to put it away when it's busy. I am going to address this when we start up for the busy season. Employees that have the opportunity to eat before they arrive, should eat first. If there's no way they can due to leaving one job & coming to this one, I want them to be more discreet.

We also use every sqaure inch of space. I do allow them to eat, BUT...they are told to put it under the counter when someone walks in. I can't very well tell them they can't eat and at the same time, it isn't their fault that I have no little room for them to eat in. Perhaps when we move we can work that in.

As unprofessional as it does look, it is very difficult for most salons that I've seen to restrict this. Most that I have visited allow their employees to eat at the counter due to limited space, but when clients are present the employee stops eating and puts their food "away." It's a touchy subject, especially when so many have so little time to eat like they should... going from job to job or school, etc.

Ok my next question is....How many hours a day are these people working? I feel if they are putting in an 8 hour day, and you don;t have an office then more power to ya eat at the counter.. but I don't find it warranted when someone is working 4 or 5 hours...

We have to eat, and we need to do it in a fast pace biz. So eating at the counter is ususally the only way unless you have enough staff on hand to relieve each other for breaks. I can't do that. Most of the time it will take me and my staff at least 45 min to an hour to eat a stupied burger. Usually the food is cold by the time I get finished. And in our salon, our guest are understanding if they walk in the door and you have just taken a big bite.

We, like most of you, have two salons that have limited counter space. One salon has no office and the other is in the back of the salon and you aren't able to see if the door bell is ringing for a customer coming in or leaving. With 8 to 9 hour employees and no lunch break it is hard to tell them they can't eat. We allow them to eat at the desk but our desk have shelves in them so that when a customer does walk in the employee can sit their food or drink on that shelf out of the customers sight. We really have not had a problem with this. Of course in peak season it is rare that our employees even try to waste money on a "big" meal knowing they will not have time to eat before it gets cold.
