Cheap Lotions

So we all know why not to use cheap lotions (i.e. Banana Boat, Panama Jack, etc.). When someone brings them in, i usually tell them it has mineral oil or petroleum and ruins the beds. Unfortunately, one of those companies has decided to come out with a lotion that says right on the back "Does Not Contain Mineral Oil." So, if a client brings that lotion in, what are you supposed to say? You know you shouldn't let them use it, but you can't use your normal argument.... Any advice??

Re: Cheap Lotions

I hate that! I just tell them I am glad they are using something, it really does make a difference. I ask how much they paid for it and then tell them when they are finished that bottle and ready to kickstart their tan to let me know because xxxxxxx would be a great step up! I figure even if I have to refer them to a $25ish bottle they will finish that and I can get them to a $35ish bottle... and so on. Good luck :)

Re: Cheap Lotions

One time someone came in with it, and I said it is a brand that is on our prohibited lotions list, and I can't allow them to use it, I just had to make sure I was covering my a** because I didn't know about that one and didn't want to risk it messing the bed up. But I'd rather have a better response to that.

Re: Cheap Lotions

Totally different but made me laugh because I have gotten some random samples with orders and such so I share them with my girls. We have a poster board in our break room titled 'Wall of Shame' and whenever they try something and don't like it- they tape it up there so we make sure not to order it.

The only brand we do not allow is Maui Babe. Anything else we check the ingredients and as long as there is no mineral oil we let them go with it.

Re: Cheap Lotions

Haha that's funny. Our salons do not allow Panama Jack, Banana Boat, European Gold, whatever the one is from Sally's Beauty Supply, and a lot of others. Basically anything you can get outside of a tanning salon. And for good reasons. Once we had a couple come in with a European Gold lotion and because the woman hid it in her purse, they used it in the beds and it took me a half hour per bed just to get the residue of the lotion off. It's BAD STUFF! When they came in the next time and i asked to see their lotion, the man cussed me out and slammed the door on his way out because I told him they couldn't use it. Explained that buying a bottle from us for even as cheap as $25 definitely beats getting a $250 bill in the mail for ruining our acrylics!

Re: Cheap Lotions

if they have a monthly I will usually give them something to try that I think will suit their needs and isnt too expensive should they purchase a bottle. they usually do afterwards. I find that natural bronzers go over well with the bottom feeders because they give an instant gratification so they get out of the bed and see more color than the banana boat or whatever. the other stuff I dont stress if they want to use, I just use two towels, soak the bed wait a minute and use the first then clean normally with the second just like we do with tingles
