I copied this from a great article and website. It explains diversion really well and why it is important to everyone in tanning be it consumer, owner, distributor, or manufacturer.

INDOOR TANNING LOTION ALERT

PHOENIX, Ariz.---Indoor tanning lotion manufacturers cannot guarantee the authenticity, age or efficacy of products sold outside of a professional indoor tanning facility! Indoor tanning products diverted to unauthorized outlets such as a non-tanning retailers, the internet or a flea market may be old, damaged, obsolete, contaminated or even counterfeit.

WHAT IS PRODUCT DIVERSION?
If you don't know the answer to this question - you're not alone. Nine out of ten consumers do not know what diversion is. But you probably have witnessed it.

Diversion is when products like indoor tanning lotions are sold in "unauthorized" places. For example, legitimate indoor tanning products are sold exclusively in tanning salons or other businesses that offer professional indoor tanning services. But you might come across indoor tanning lotions in your local supermarket, drugstore, online or at a discounter. Indoor tanning lotions you find outside of a professional indoor tanning facility are considered to be "diverted."
WHY DIVERSION IS BAD
Diverted products can be counterfeit, diluted formulas, or old, expired formulas that may not be safe to use. This means if you buy an indoor tanning lotion in a supermarket, drugstore or any other outlet other than an indoor tanning facility, no one can guarantee that it is an authentic product that will perform as tested.

ARE YOU IN DANGER?
You could be. Contaminated or counterfeit products could cause irritation or even infection.

WHO IS DIVERTING PRODUCTS?
Products are sometimes diverted by unauthorized distributors plus other individuals who see profit in piracy.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP STOP DIVERSION
Don't risk it, don't buy it! And tell your friends about the potential danger of diverted products! Again, if you see an indoor tanning lotion for sale outside a salon, Don't Buy It!
