Lying to your customer about nonexistent acrylic damage is by far the worst thing you could do to your bottom line.Steve Miller

This is a tricky subject. Obviously, a K-Mart lotion shouldn't say it's sold in professional salons. But that's an exception. LA Tan (which was sold to tanning salons through legit distributors back in the late 80s early 90s) is an exception. I have posted a sign also but we may not be on firm ground here. There is nothing in these water based "approved for tanning bed" formulas that would cause acrylic damage. They are as up to date in formulas and graphics to anything else I offer. We would like to believe that a $40.00 lotion is so much better than a $9.99 one, but is it? I've seen formulas in these drug store lotions that are almost identical to the ones I carry in my store that I paid plenty for. If the formula showed up in a California Tan product with their brand name clout, you wouldn't know the difference and neither would your customers. It's all a shell game. You can't blame other vendors (and aren't they nearly always from Florida) the right to profit from the tanning lotion explosion. It was bound to happen. The fact that they make money off these sub-$10 lotions tells you something about the profit margin involved with JA, Cal Tan or the other bigs. I've always believed cosmetics and lotions are 90% sizzle and 10% steak. We buy these products for the promise, not because of the accurate fulfilment of that promise (witness the anit-aging lotion boom). Do we all look a lot younger now? Of course not. But we buy them anyway because of the hope. It's a fact that people tan quite well with or without a lotion and if people think it's all in the lotion, great. But Consumer Reports has tested cosmetics and lotions for years and has found no correlation between quality, effectiveness and price. Esoteric ingredients and fancy sounding formula hooks are put there to make you believe in the upper line's value compared to the lower ones. To me it's all marketing. Manufacturers (and salons) have profited from consumers' willingness to pay high prices for these lotions. Maybe we've all gotten a little too greedy and this is the pay-back. As a salon owner, I wish to sell the highest priced lotions I can and I don't want anything to get in the way of me doing so. But we need to be honest. If someone can prove a salon lotion's superiority by some objective measure, than I'd welcome it and use that info to sell my lotions against the discount brands. But just saying, "Those K-mart lotions are crappy" won't cut it.

propylene glycol stereate - that is one of the ingredients that will harm your acrylics. There are many more. Email Steve Chaney with Smart Tan and ask him about it. He teaches this is in his basic certification class. Telling someone that the lotion they are using is not permitted in your salon, if done right, will not run customers off. It will EDUCATE them. Isn't that what we are here to do??? If not, then why not treat tanning beds the same way we do laundromats??? Drop in a quarter, get a tan. When a customer comes in with this type of lotion, we explain to them why they cannot use the lotion, offer to give them a free sample of something better, and show them lotions that are not top of the line, a $12 - 15 bottle of lotion. For me, I have very few problems with this anymore.

Sun Station, I tried to get a hold of Steve Chaney, with no luck about propylene glycol stereate being harmful to acrylics. I did get through to Polycast the maker of Solacryl cast acrylic they had no information that propylene glycol stereate would be harmful to acrylic. I also phoned two lotion manufactures, both of which told me that it is not harmful to acrylic. I think that Steve Chaney is in error.Steve Miller

Propylene Glycol Potentially harmful ingredient found in many skin care & food products.PROPYLENE GLYCOL - Commonly used in moisturizers as a humectant, propylene glycol binds moisture to itself and is believed to hold moisture in the skin - keeping it soft and young. Proponents quote and maintain studies showing it to be a safe, effective ingredient. However, many scientists now believe that propylene glycol is harmful to the skin because of the following reasons:In industry, propylene glycol is used as an anti-freeze in potable water systems and as hydraulic fluid. On the skin, it gives a smooth, greasy feel, but it does so by replacing and repelling important components necessary for healthy skin. While binding moisture, propylene glycol also repels moisture. It therefore acts as a replacement for water, but the skin cannot utilize it. Skin functions on water, not anti-freeze.MATERIAL SAFETY DATA ANALYSIS (MSDS) sheets on propylene glycol indicate that contact with the skin can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. In cosmetics, a typical formulation is 10-20% propylene glycol. (Note: on most ingredient-content statements, propylene glycol is often found near the top of the list - Indicating its strong concentration). This high level of usage is a possible cause of increasing liver- and kidney-related health problems. In January, 1991, a clinical review was published in the American Academy of Dermatologists, Inc., concerning dermatitis and propylene glycol. This report showed propylene glycol to cause a significant number of reactions and was a primary irritant to the skin even in low levels of concentration.A typical MSDS Data Sheet on Propylene Glycol: http://www.chem.utah.edu/MSDS/P/PROPYLENE_GLYCOL Not Harm Acrylics, What About Us???!!!![ August 17, 2001: Message edited by: buntanner ]

Wink Re: LA Express and LA Tan

How can you people let something so stupid bother you' Yes I wouldn't allow the product in my salon but thats as far as I would go with it. I couldn't be bothered going any further, its not worth the aggravation or my time. I have better things to do with my time then to get aggravated over something so stupid. Also wheres the competition? (There's none).
So why waste your time & energy.
