Rep Power: 20 | Death by Suntan at Age 26: Did your lamps kill this young girl?? For years, Glenna Kohl pursued a tan, both in the sun and in tanning beds—which new research shows are far deadlier than once thought. By 22, she was battling the most lethal form of skin cancer. http://www.marieclaire.com/health-fi...1449_171428727 BigLeo -- Just saying |

Rep Power: 20 | Re: Death by Suntan at Age 26: Did your lamps kill this young girl?? Old news Cosmo ran the same article 6 years ago. Just saying. She was a life guard out in the sun 8+ hours a day for like 4 summers. Kinda hard to blame a tanning bed. Last edited by sbt501; 04-21-2015 at 10:35 PM. |

Rep Power: 25 | Re: Death by Suntan at Age 26: Did your lamps kill this young girl?? In fact, the article states: 1. "In high school" - she had a mole removed from her leg which was misdiagnosed as benign - in fact, she already HAD Melanoma! 2. She then worked for 5 summers as a lifeguard, working 40+ hrs/week wearing #4 sunscreen. 3. During the off season, she tanned "As much as once per week". So to try to suggest that her occasional indoor tanning caused her melanoma is just plain stupid. She was unlucky. She got cancer as a juvenile. Hers happened to be melanoma. And it was misdiagnosed. This is an article about the dangers of medical misdiagnosis - not indoor tanning. |

Rep Power: 25 | Re: Death by Suntan at Age 26: Did your lamps kill this young girl?? p.s. if she lived by the beach and was interested enough to be a lifeguard for 5 years, I'm willing to bet she MAY have spent time there as a kid - and perhaps a bad burn, or two, or twenty, over the years..... |

Rep Power: 20 | Re: Death by Suntan at Age 26: Did your lamps kill this young girl?? But she did die from tanning. Whether tanning is from the Sun or from a tanning bed -- IT'S TANNING! If it walks like a duck, quaks like a duck, IT'S A DUCK!! I wish suntanning salon owners would accept some of the blame. Tanning beds kill!! Stop making claims that your 20,000 watt beds are safe. They are not. You are fast cooking people and you know it. The Surgeon General says smoking can KILL you. Same thing goes with tanning beds!! BigLeo -- just saying the obvious |

She died from Melanoma. Specifically - a bad combination of melanoma and a medical misdiagnosis. There is NO science that shows causation between indoor sun, outdoor sun, or even bad burns and Melanoma - or any other skin cancer. There is LIMITED research that shows there MAY be a very slight incremental increase in the CORRELATION between UV exposure and skin cancer. There is BETTER research showing there is a bigger incremental increase in the CORRELATION between UV exposure and positive results from a lot of OTHER more common cancers and diseases. I have years of research and statistical methods training - what you have stated is NOT SUPPORTED by ANY RESEARCH! It is only repeating the same thing that poorly trained journalists write out of a lack of education. | |

Maybe we should compare diets and genes.
