Re: Why should you love your tanning lamps?

I was averaging 3oz per spray. Depends on the unit you use. Some use much more & some much less.

Who says this exactly?
Every salon owner I know gets excited about getting new lamps. Do we want to spend $4000 to only do a top drop and facial replacement? No. Do we get excited for our business and our customer feedback when we do? YES!
However, I do have to say I don't have to spend upwards of $1200 a month to turn on my lotions. Further, if I drop a lotion while rearranging the display, I don't have to sweep up broken glass and pay to order more.

John is very wise, and I think the world of him but I think the O.P. is an apples and oranges kind of analogy. A successful salon will have all 3 things mentioned, and I for one am glad my competitors don't change their lamps as much as they should.

Re: Why should you love your tanning lamps?

I think a lot of it is how you budget your $$.

Lotions tend to get purchased in small "chunks". A few hundred here, a few hundred there. Small bites.

Lamps tend to come in "full meals". A few THOUSAND here, a few thousand there.

NOW - if you put aside a little in a "lamp fund", every week/month -- then it isn't that hard to do, just pull out your lamp $$ already waiting.

But of course..........MOST of us don't do that........it is just sitting in our general account and we like to think of it as "profit".........so it tugs a bit more at our wallet to have to take it out and spend it on lamps!

Still - at the end of the day - it IS how we make our money! And busy season is HERE - so bring it on!!!

Re: Why should you love your tanning lamps?

for these reasons mentioned by john...as much as i cringe at the thought of clients not using a lotion whle tanning...i sometimes tell them i should'nt care so much if they use one or not as not using, they have to tan way more...and i make way more monies off the tanning units than the lotions anyhow. :)

Bingo, everyone should have a line on their monthly P&L sheet for lamp replacement AND equipment replacement. That money should go into a separate account at the bank, not the general funds account.

There may be an opportunity for lamp distributors to offer a budgeted plan via a monthly EFT for salons that have a hard time budgeting on their own.

IE: Your lamp distributor would debit you an amount of $200-$2000 a month (depending on number/type of equipment and lamp usage/tanning volume). A simple consultation would figure out what that budget should be. Then when you need lamps, they are paid for and ship ASAP.

Like the old "Christmas accounts" banks used to offer. Or "layaway" (I'm showing my age.....).

A lot of salon owners would benefit from something like this!
