What is the powder on the lamps?

After running the beds for a few weeks the lamps start getting dusty feeling. Some once one told me it is sulfur. Is it true or is it just the lamps getting dusty?

Thanks

Just dust. Wipe it off with a rag and windex.

Just be aware that you are going to have to keep doing this on a regular basis too. I find that most salons that I have personally been to, know nothing about dusting out the insides of the beds as part of their maintenance.

Cocaine!

Use a dry paper towel to remove, and save in dry location for BIG Upgrade Sales.!

If you are running f-72 or F-73 RDC lamps then do not wipe off the lamp. It has a silicone coating on it which aids in starting the lamp. (feels slippery) Lamps that run on mag ballasts need a ground plane to help ignite the lamp along with the silicone coating. Lamps that run on choke ballasts do not need a ground plane and do not have the silicone coating.

I was told one time that the dust is mostly dead skin cells.
Wipe it off several lamps and then smell your rag.... ughh. you'll never forget what it smells like... rank

Brian, are you serious? That is wierd. I did not know that. I wipe all my lamps even when they are new.

In case anyone is wondering if Brian was on to something-
The silicone oil coating is applied at the factory to new lamps. Its to make them more slippery and less likely to break during packing and shipping. It does not act as a conductive coating, and does not aid in lamp starting. It is very thin but does absorbs UV and attracts dust, and is an outgassing condensible (some will evaporate from the hot lamps and condense on the reflectors acrylics, canopies, fans, walls, carpets, customers, etc.) The shipping oil should be removed when the lamps are unpacked and installed.

Good to know!

I've also always wiped mine down before installing. I figured there would be cardboard flecks, dust etc and just start it all fresh.

Nice to hear I was doing the right thing! :-)
