200watt 71" Lamps???

I was told by two lamp manufacturers that ALL 200 Watt 71" lamps are really 160 watt lamps. The third lamp manufacturer said this is not true. 2 out of 3 lamp manufacturers (not distributors) have told me that 200 watt 71" lamps are really 160 watt lamps. Is this why my Sungate V1 with 200 watt ballasts eat up lamps??? The engineers said that a true 200w lamp only comes in a 2m length. Its amazing how ****** off engineers can get with a simple question like; Can you recommend the best 200watt 71" lamp on the market?

Re: 200watt 71" Lamps???

The lamp itself does not really have a wattage. The wattage is determined by the ballast not the lamp. Lamps are designed to run at a certain wattage. Most 71" lamps are designed to be run at 160w. You can run them at higher wattages but you will be overdriving them thus reducing the lamp life. In the case of your Sungate the lamps are powered by a 180w 220v ballast. You are probably pushing 240v so the actual output is right around 205w.

Having said certain 160w lamps have been modified slightly to be able to handle higher wattages.

Also Supra® F-1600 FS® BP-R are capable at wattages over 200. They outperform any other lamp in the Sungate and other units in output and longevity.

HO is a wattage range of 80 watts to 120 watts

VHO is a wattage range of 140 watts to 250 watts.
