Equip mix - when (and what) to add or subtract?

It's a common question...........

What can I do to make MY salon more profitable? And especially when taking over a salon, a common thought is --- "Is this the 'right' mix or should something be added/subtracted?"

Recently HotTan posted the following:

isn't it a different animal,( true HP) hey I don't want to spend the money if I don't have to

let say i don't have a market, will I be viewed as a slumlord? without updating?

1 ultrasun solarwind 5000 magnum
2 ultrasun sunburst 4000 3/magnum
1 power tower 12000
3 ultrasun sunburst 4000 100 watters
1 red bed
1 MT 3000 blue box

1800 sq ft 9 rooms

plus one extra space 15x7 in the back I could put something it.

Do I need to swap anything out here?

The key here is that before ANY suggestions of changes in the "mix" should be done - there is a lot of information to collect first!!

For example:

1. Get the data!

a. What units/levels get the MOST use? Least? % of sessions on each in a year

b. What is your pricing structure? What packages get purchased most - and least?

c. What is your room size, HVAC tonnage and electrical capacity?

2. What is the "status" of your equipment currently?

a. Age of lamps (hours)?

b. General cosmetic condition

c. General mechanical condition (everything working?)

3. What is your budget to make changes?

Re: Equip mix - when (and what) to add or subtract?

For example, looking at that mix, it appears you probably have:

Level 1 - 3 ultrasun sunburst 4000 100 watters

Level 2 - 2 ultrasun sunburst 4000 3/magnum

Level 3 - 1 ultrasun solarwind 5000 magnum and 1 power tower 12000 (?)

Red light - 1 red bed
Spray - 1 MT 3000 blue box

Seems like a reasonable mix. A "guess" would be that redlight isn't well utilized - just because MOST salons don't get good usage. But anything in that mix CAN make money - if priced and marketed properly.

And anything in that mix COULD sit empty - if priced and marketed inappropriately.

An obvious "hole" would be HP --- but it isn't the "only" option by any means, and that discussion has already been played out on another thread, so if the 3 questions above pointed to HP as the "best" option, then you have plenty to read there already :-)

How about just adding another 5000. I have Multiples of my higher end units.
