Question about Sungates.... - tanTALK

Hey, I'm looking to add a nice VHR to the salon, and am intersted in a Sungate possibly. I have a few questions for clarification if someone could help, that'd be great.

I see that people talk about V1 and V2....what is the difference between the two? I believe that the V2 has a diffrent lamp configuartion (200 watt lamps in the cnopy instead of 180), is this correct?

When does the V2 model start? 2006? Are there some 2006's that are V1's and some that are V2's?

Also, I've heard that they will tan the crap out of you, and are hard on lamps.

Is this jsut the V2, or is the V1 a ******* tan as well? And is the V1 hard on the lamps, or just the V2?

Basically, I'm kind of looking for a very brief Sun Gate 101 course.

Any help would be appreciated.

Oh, one oer thing.....I keep seeing people talk about "needing the boards" and what not.....

Somebody want to explain that one to me?

Is it an upgrade that should be gotten? Is it necessairy? And how much does this cost if it is not already done on the bed?

Sungate 101:

V1 are 2005 and earlier.
V2 are 2006 and later.

V1 have 29 180w ballasts in the canopy.
V2 have 30 200w ballasts in the canopy.

V1 have 21 160w lamps in the bench
V2 have 22 160w lamps in the bench

V1 boards have major problems.
V2 boards have had some problems.

V2 have shoulder tanners and misting as well.

No you cannot upgrade.

They both tan the crap out of you and are hard on the canopy lamps.

RobertK - Thanks for the reply, it was quite helpful. You mentioned the boards i.e V1 have big problems, and V2 have some.....

What IS the problem? Is it something that can be fixed? Is it a big enough probem that would preclude one from purchasing a V1?

The board problem has been fixed. They now have the replacement boards for both the V1 & V2 Gates.

V1: 180 watt top, 160 watt bottom
V2: 200 watt top, 160 watt bottom
Both use F-71 bi-pin

V2 has shoulder tanners, misters and A/C, A/C can be installed in V1 and later V1 came with it.

Both eat lamps. Both tan great. 200 watt in V2 just raises consumption but not reallythe tanning power. Just for bragging that it is 200 watts.

Boards have been a problem and there are no replacements, just a full on board which will get the unit running but all features are permenantly set on high so if the stock board goes bad then it can still work just all features are on high and keypad will no longer work.

V1 and V2 eat the bushings at the hinge point. Just replace the bushings before this is a problem.

OK so the board issue is no longer a problem....So let's say I can get a V1 for $8750 and a V1 for $7250, all things being equal, is the V2 worth the extra money? Both units have similar hours, approx 1000.

Brian, FI now has full replacement boards for both units.

Get the V2 hands down. Better looking newer unit with more options. That is a very sharp price on a V2. Are you sure it is a V2?
