Smile an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

What is an ideal tanning lamp? In that I mean what percentage of UVB and UVA rays makes a good tanning lamp? Obvioulsy too much UVB could make a person get a bit of sunburn. I understand that UVB rays are necessary in a tanning lamp, I was to believe that UVB rays kind of, for lack of a better word, help kick start the tanning process in a person and the UVA rays help activate the melanin and once the melanin is brought to the surface and once it is oxidized it becomes a tan.

What does TYROSINE have to do with the tanning process? I was also brought to believe that tyrosine is a protein the body produces, but what does it do, does it help stimulate the melanin once the UV rays are emitted? I'm sorry, back to my main question, what is am acceptable amount of UVB rays and UVA rays in a tanning lamp? Obviously people do NOT want to burn when they tan and there cannot be a lamp that is all UVA rays. One of my closest friends got her dream and is opening her tanning salon and has asked me to try to find out good tanning lamps, if possible ones without alot of UVB rays so no sunburns. I believe she is using cosmolux / cosmedico lamps. I have noticed in tanning salons i go toand they seem like a very popular lamp. I have also noticed lamps used in WOLFF tanning beds tend to burn the cllient.

I once used Phillips tanning lamps, 100 watts reflective lamps and i got nice and deep dark brown and NO signs of a sunburn at all. My friend has 100 watt lamps in her starter beds with 1 face 400 watt face tanner ( the clients can turn the face tanner off if they want ) and she has 160 watts reflective lamps with 8-400 watt face tanners in her stronger beds. I believe she is using " Ergoline " tanning beds ...? ALSO is it true that face tanning lamps have higher amounts of UVA rays and UVA rays delve deeper into the skins surface so the tan will last longer....is this true? I have seen tanning units that are ALL high pressure facial lamps and that salon I seen this bed in states that once the desired amount of tan is aquired, the client can keep up that tan / color by tanning only a few times a MONTH to keep that tan and desired color. There has to be UVB rays in those lamps also but small amounts, correct?

I am sorry for asking so many questions, I am trying to help her and also myself in understanding and learning about tanning lamps and facial lamps and the percentage amounts of UVA and UVB rays in a lamp that will give a good tan and minimal if no sunburn at all. I AM going to open my own salon within the next year or so, but I hope in your eyes it is not too early to find out answers to these questions, for my friend and also for myself.
When someone gets a chance I would very much appreciate any reply and you can also e-mail me at " All4u1013@aol.com " ......I hope putting my e-mail address isn't against your policy, if so I am very sorry and delete it if necessary.

Thank you very much in taking the time to read all of this...have a good week and weekend !!!
your friend,

Ricky :glasses:

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

If you are looking for a good starter lamp to be used in a base bed, (depending on the bed model etc) I'd go with something between 4-5% UVB. This is a fairly standard amount of UVB in a lamp. It provides great melanin stimulation and great oxidation from the UVA as well. The time you allow fair customers to use this bed (especially if the lamps are fresh) has to be reduced to avoid getting any pink from it. Someone with a solid base tan can easily go 15-20 minutes in this type of bed.

Philips, Radiance and Lightsources are all great lamps. Philips has a Performance lamp with very low UVB in the 1.5% range that is great for fair skinned clients as well as really giving a dark bronze tan to clients with a base tan.

I really have no opinion on Tyrosine-some say it's wonderful, others are like me and say makes little difference.

High Pressure units do provide a deep bronze tan but you will still need to bring that melanin to the surface and the only real way to do that is slow, controlled tanning in low pressure units with UVB. The tan achieved from high pressure units is deeper indeed but high amounts of UVA can cause damage at a deeper level as well.

Good luck with your salon opening! IMHO Tanses, Ergoline equipment is the bomb!

Julian, I agree with just about everything you said about the low pressure lamps. There are really only a couple of Hp bed out there that are ultra low uvb like Ultrabronz and th Heartland bed. Beds like the Magic, Mastersun, and Matrix are around the 1.6% uvb which is enough to even start out in these beds. Other beds like the Ergoline 1050, in my opinion, have way too much uvb for a high pressure bed.

Puretan is out of business and never manufacturered lamps. Light Source made their lamps. Any lamp for $7.50 isn't much of a lamp, you will be relamping real soon.

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

Tanamerica uses magnetic ballast. The Puretan uses choke ballasts, even though the lamps use the rdc connectors. You can't use choke lamps in a magnetic ballasts bed. They won't operate correctly and may not last as long. The Puretan lamps were made
by Light Source and I have never heard anyone complain about their lamps. They may be discounting them because Puretan is out of business and they are trying to get rid of them. Light Source makes a very good lamp.

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

Lightsource did make them as private label.
So at $7.50 should I stay away from them???
And I do have Tan America VIP3200 that I want to put them in.
Maybe I should call tan America and see if they will work.

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

If you have magnetic ballast, I don't think they will work. The lamps made for magnetic ballasts have a different gas in them than the ones made for choke ballasts. I think they also have different cathodes in them. I do know that magnetic ballasts will eat up the new era lamps like the 9k90 lamps and Solglass lamps. I would check to see if they work in your Tanamerica beds but I don't think they will. I have some Puretan beds and I wouldn't be afraid to use them. They may just be discounting them to get rid of them

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

Ok, I sell the Bronze Twister Extreme Hot 9.5 100W lamps as well as many others. Customers will wait in line for the 9.5 lamps. Now, here is my question. A competitor is trying to sell one of my customer a new lamp that converts a traditional SunVision 28 Lamp 71 BiPin, 20-minute bed to a 10 minute bed and she also told him that the twisted burn out too fast, a problem I only experienced with 1 bad batch of bulbs and the company corrected. Does anyone know what this 10 minute conversion lamp would be, my sources and I cannot find anything of the sort and I think she is just full of BS. Does anyone here know anything...

Re: an IDEAL tanning lamp.....

Okay - sounds like I am in the same boat....I have Sonnebraun Body Scan 3200 beds with reflector strips and the lamps I bought this year are Radiance 5000 and they don't seem to do as well as the ones I had last year. I am in the process of "getting ready" for the "lamp change" and would really like an honest answer to what I should use. I also have the three lamp face tanners that clip in and this year they seem like a bomb as well. First time buying lamps and I think I listened to the wrong person. Any serious, honest answers are appreciated.
