When to change bulbs in stand-up unit

Hello. I have a Sundome 10 minute Stand-up unit in my salon, and am unsure as to when to change the bulbs. I was told by ETS that its after 800 hours. However, I checked my timer and i'm only at 300 hours. We have been using the same bulbs for almost 2 years. Is it normal to not change the stand up bulbs as often as the average 20 minute lay-down, for example? The unit still seems to be effective.

Oh, also, you could blow what it would cost you to relamp a couple of beds on five or six different UV meters and spend every day running tests for the next 500 usage hours - that would be another option.

Lamps do not go bad over time. If they only have 300hrs and they are still tanning then you are fine.

NOW, 800hrs is kinda a long shot with a booth that's only a 10min timer. I would say 500hrs and get an order ready.

The "Belvy" has "issues" with UV meters because he doesn't understand them and hence™ gets all his "facts" wrong.

For example... only one meter (not five) is needed to check lamp aging from new to down 30%. One measurement monthly (not every day) will keep track of outputs just fine.

In your case, however, since you don't know what the NEW readings were, you'd have to stick a couple new lamps (of the same kind) in... and compare them to the old ones. Simple.

Re: When to change bulbs in stand-up unit

The Vitamin D meter and excel spreadsheet is the beez kneez! You can get MED and Vitamin D info from it and you can estimate based on specific variables.

What's quite interesting is that all tanning beds regardless of lamp/watts seem to provide about the same amount of Vitamin D production in 1MED.

Within 10% at least.

Also, you get almost NO Vitamin D production wearing SPF 15 regardless of the bed.

You most likely have the bronzing suns in this unit and they won't last 800 hours. All depends on the voltage going to your unit, heat, dirt etc. 500-600 hours and I would change them. Then invest in a UV meter when you purchase new lamps.

Re: When to change bulbs in stand-up unit

We do have the Bronzing Sun bulbs. They are still strong, but I feel like they are more on a "Level 1" than the "Level 2" results they are supposed to be putting out. I have no idea what a UV meter is...i've never even heard of it. Can someone please explain this to me?

Gasp! How can this be ?? Mr Belvy would be proud of you.

Just go to www.solarmeter.com and click on Model 5.0. Forget about the other models... as you are a meter virgin.

Then read: http://www.islandsuntimes.com/04-07/measure.htm

Re: When to change bulbs in stand-up unit

Wow, not to sound stupid, but I had no idea you could even do that. That would definitely help out big time! I know that room temperature and ventilation have a lot to do with the life of the bulbs, and this would be a great way to find out if it is effecting the bulb life. Thanks!
