Cages Blocking UV!?!?!?!?!

ok...so....i own a 2003 ETS Sun Dome XL 48....and yes I know this is probably the worst stand up unit ever made.....here is my problem...the unit has about 500 hours on it and recently I have noticed a severe power decrease... so my moms boyfriend and I (who is an elctrical engineer) ran all sorts of tests....everything from replacing lamps, adding capacitors, increasing voltage, thoroughly cleaning the entire unit......and it turns out to be that those stupid cages are blocking the uv!!!......has anybody ever heard of this???.....this is insane....it wasn't like this when the unit was new.....the uv meter reads 20 to 22 with the cages on.....but when they were removed the meter jumps to about 33 to 35!!!!....i just want to hear from some people who have a lot of experience.....these lamps are Philips Advantage XPT 808's!!!!.....Not weak lamps!!.......please!!...any input is appreciated!!!!!........

Re: Cages Blocking UV!?!?!?!?!

no idea!!...on each panel when i hold the cage up in front of the lamps the meter drops significantly....i have a much higher reading with the cages off.....this makes no sense...but it is what it is.......i see the uv drop with my own eyes on the meter....

Re: Cages Blocking UV!?!?!?!?!

Your cage is not making your meter drop that amount.

Re: Cages Blocking UV!?!?!?!?!

always metering at the same distance.......if i change it all the time the metering obviously won't be consistent......

the question was how close are you metering them! not if it was the same distance everytime....maybe your to close and the cages are reflecting it away from the meter a bit.
