Melted End

I was replacing a lamp that went out prematurely on one of our units. After taking the lamp out I realized the end looked to be melted and the socket/lamp housing is ruined. What would cause this? Just wear on the unit or could it be a power/heat issue?

Re: Melted End

Old age? Lots of heat over time perhaps.

Re: Melted End

Is this a common repair or is it something I should look into further?

Re: Melted End

just replace it and move on. Could have been a goof.

Re: Melted End

I've never had to change a lampholder yet. Once you get access to them, it's an easy fix.

Re: Melted End

Lamp holders are about a $6 part and easy to fix. They will fail over time, especially if a lamp isn't seated exactly right and it winds up frying out the insides. Not necessarily a sign of anything else, although if the same lamp holder goes again after you replace it, then you should investigate further.

Re: Melted End

When you replace the lamp holder, try to make sure the wires are fitting tightly. Almost sounds like a wire may have been arcking
