When I was looking for tanning units to open my salon, a dealer told me you could buy a bed with a 20 min max tan time and put 10 minute bulbs in them? Is that true? Does that work for all beds?

My ten minute bed was not popular at all, empty 50% of the time when the 20's were full. I went the other way and put 20 minute lamps in it.

My 10 min bed is one of our most used for 5 yrs now. Keeping fresh lamps always. It is a good unit choice for those people always in a hurry.

Do you plan on changing the timer and getting the bed recertified?

There is a hair salon in my area that has 20 min beds that they now say are 10 min beds. Most clients tell me that they burn in their beds. Is it because of they are not putting the right lamps in them?

If you are using a T-max timer for instance, you may want to change the chip in it to make sure it cannot be set above 10 minutes, here in Canada, we don't have to worry about recertifying a bed when changing lamps, but you better look into that. I would really look into whether or not you really want to go to ten minutes. My clients want the longer session time, relaxation purposes. They use the stand-up when they are in a hurry. If anything, drop to 15 minutes. As far as the hair salon burning people with 10 minute lamps. You have to remember that the shorter the session time, the more intense the UV output, maybe they haven't figured that one out yet. Every clients sesion time should be cut in half if they used to use 20 minute lamps. No offence to those hair/tanning salon combinations, but tanning is generally not their first concern.

My beds are 10 minute beds, but I have 1 20 minute bed. 20 minute beds do not go over well in my area. I live in a busy mall area and people are always in a hurry. 10 minute beds will all be full and someone waiting (well, not likley this time of year but..) while the 20 minute is sitting empty. I was really asking on a technical level. Not gonna hurt the bed or cause complication, right? So the concensus is, its okay to put 10 minute bulbs in a 20 minute bed? As long as I only allow clients to lay only 10 minutes?
