Rep Power: 0 | i have heard of salons using something called a B-Booth, customers have said they really get dark with them. Has anyone heard of them? I went to see them for myself and they seemed to be nothing more than a closet with some mirrors on the walls and 2 lamps in each corner (equator suns). You stand in front of them for about 1 or 2 minutes then get in the bed. |

Rep Power: 23 | They are really not supposed to be used in tanning salons any more. The original UVB Booths came with FS lamps that are 65% UVB, usually 1 or 2 in each corner, they would come on for about 2 minutes max to stimulate the melanin, then the other 20-30 lamps would kick on they were low UVB & high UVA lamps to help oxidize the melanin, yes they will get you really dark. The FS style lamps are very dangerous & should not be used by anyone. They are mainly used in medical applications to treat some skin conditions. They are to be used by perscription only. |

Rep Power: 22 | Some "B-booths" are legally grandfathered if they were in service before September 8, 1986. The originals had only "UVB" lamps with two lamps in each corner of a square booth. These booths didn't get most people dark by themselves. But when used in conjunction with "UVA beds" (less than 1%), an extremely dark tan was achieved by the customers. The maximum allowable time under the original May 7, 1980 version of 21 CFR 1040.20 was 10 minutes. Starting time was never more than 1 or 2 minutes maximum. Risk of burning in 1 minute was, and remains minimal. UVB lamps are no longer marketed as tanning lamps because there is no manufactured suntanning equipment that uses them as OEM lamps with maximum timer intervals calculated by Te. Therefore, there is no equipment for which any "UVB" lamp is compatible. So, in the absense of a prescription or medical use certification, suppliers cannot sell them for suntanning applications even if the equipment in which they are to be used was pre 1986. Nowadays a significant amount of the people who use a real "B-Booth" (not a fake onesthat use Equator Sun or similar "high-B" lamps) are literally sent to tanning salons with prescriptions by their dermotologists. But if a tanning salon has a genuine pre-1986 B-Booth, they can legally let any customer use them. Maximun times now are typically only 5 minutes though. Also, depending on the wording of specific state regulations, these are even "legal" in some regulated states that simply make compliance to 21 CFR 1040.20 mandatory. However, with the choices of lamps for real tanning equipment, the usefulness of B-booths is nearly zero, anymore. |
