I am just thinking outloud here. I know this is probably a very dumb question but here goes...

If you have single phase electrical are there any adapters, so to speak, that you could use to hook up a three phase tanning unit?

Hello Mitzi, I am not a electrician but this is what I know. 3 phase power can be switched to single phase power. But single phase power can't be brought up to three phase power. You have to have 3 phase sevice coming in to your salon to have it.

I agree, but I was wondering why or if an adapter could be possible. LOL I know I am stretching here. Just curious.

There is a device called a phase converter that will convert single phase to 3 phase. We have used them to power electric morors but have not tried them in a tanning bed. They look like a motor.

Lampman is correct, what you need is a single phase motor driver connected by shaft to a 3 phase generator. Would be pretty big and not extremely efficient. There are no radio shack 3 phase converters.

In our business we call these motor-generators. They are large, expensive, inefficient, and make a lot of noise. It would NOT be a practical way to power a tanning bed.

Phase converters do not generate clean power and are not recommended to power tanning EQ. All the parts in the bed are single phase. They are just broken up over three poles to balance the larger load. The bed can be re-wired to run on single phase. Some have jumpers internally to do this easily. Others require a little more thought. All beds can be converted either way.
